Im in the Army on a anti-terrorism base....I do combat search and rescue...I carry currently a RAT3 and a CRKT M21-14SF and on my IBA "body armor "
I carry a cold steal tanto.Hidden in my belt is a gerber kiss and on my belt also is a Leatherman.....Sounds like I have a serious knife fetish.....yeah..becouse I have about 10 other knives here also....but what caught my eye recently was the Mercworx Sniper.....but reviews on it are far and few....so I wanted others opinions...as I have never bought anything over 100 bucks before....

I was hopeing someone could throw me some bones and fill me in on the blade....also are there others out there with the beautiful curves like that one...I saw the MODs as well...but not fond of the fantasy looking guard.

Thanks

i havent seen the one ya speak of but i have seen a few mercworx thru the yrs, mostly the folders, all i have seen had very good F&F, good grind lines and cool grinds, a lot of folks think they are overpriced i cant argue with 'em on that, if ya really like the one ya spoke of and find a decent deal, no reason not to get it imho.

i have also heard they have issues with customer service but they seem to be doing better on that lately.

No experience with that brand but if you want to look into something else the Benchmade mini-Rukus is an awsome knife. You might prefer the full sized version though. Sorry i couldn't help you with the model/company you were looking at though.

Oh and about that knife fetish most people if not everyone here can relate. I carry that much though in folders not fixed blades on scout outings :) :).

IIRC the sniper is a fixed blade, ya might also look at busse, they are probably a better deal, they are certainly more popular if that means anything lol.

the busse is probably one of if not the top fixed blade maker unless ya go the custom route.

sorry I didn't notice the knife you were looking at was a fixed blade. But if you are ever looking for a new folder my suggestion works.

The MW Sniper is nicely crafted but I'm not so sure the design is the best if you want it for SD. Their micarta handles are too smooth, IMHO. You could certainly modify the handle.

The good old K-Bar fighting knife is hard to beat.

If you want something different, but not as pretty, I like the Strider Mk 1 and Mk 1A.

The Randall Made #1 and #14 are both outstanding in finish and design.

I have held the sniper
very thick hefty blade
nice fit and finish
the new chili pepper handles are great, they are polished micarta but have a great solid comfortable feel to them
good balance
a very nice fighter

I would also look into Busse and Scrap yard knives

I really like the Mercworx especially with the chili pepper handle. I wonder how many people
who are commenting on them have actually handled one? They are very well thought out for knife fighting and I am especially impressed with the finish. It is a scotchguard finish so it can be easily touched up if it gets scratched. People here have no problem paying that much for a Chris Reeve because they know it has a great rep and terrific fit and finish. The Mercworx are similar they just have not been around as long. They got an excellent review in Tactical Knives mag as well.

I would definitly go for a Sniper with a Chili pepper handle. Especially considering your job. Personally I would rather have 1 really good knife than 2 r 3 decent ones.
The Mercworx knives are made for actual knife fighting which is rare even with tactical knives. The guy who designs the mercworx knives also does some cruder cheaper ones for a Sudanese Christian militia which does a LOT of hand to hand combat so they know how to make a fighting knife. His knife company is called Grayman.

Just so you know their heart is in the right place. You can get the Grayman knives engraved.

If you search the grayman site you can find the Tactical knives Mercworx article as well as some good knife fighting stuff and info about their militia.

Here's my MW Sniper and friends.

Of the four knives below, the MW Sniper feels the least secure when it comes to keeping
your hand from slipping down on blade, should you thrust the knife hard into something and the knife
stops quickly. If you gave the Micarta scales the Gunner Grip treatment all those sharp edged little
holes would make the Snipers grip feel more grippy.

agree with most of what ya say but imho a good review in tac knives mag means zero to me, have ya EVER seen 'em give a knife a BAD review lol??

mercworx does a lot of advertising with them IIRC and i bet that could have some impact on the reviews they get, perhaps.....?

Awesome....Thanks for the heads up....God forbid I have to go hand to hand...but if so....bet your ass Im coming out on top with 5 to 7 inches buried in their soul...
And I want to be damn sure I pull the blade out and keep it...

Side note.....It pisses me off when in movies guys kill someone with a knife and leave it.....why oh why

and yes I did see it in Resident Evil 4
Thats how it started....

HoooRah Im gonna go look into those Busse s'

X2. I come here for real reviews.

I would give serious consideration to the ZT 100 from Kershaw . I think you can do better for the price point . The few examples I have handled were well done , but I managed to keep my wallet in my pocket . You could get a ZT 200 folder , an a ZT 100 ( fixed blade ) for less an generally be better served .

Busse makes some fine knifes, but note that many of them are designed to be heavy choppers for woodcraft uses. Just because "combat" is in their name doesn't mean they are all designed for the type of knife fighting you are talking about.

Have a look at the good old KaBar USMC fighting knife.

For more money consider the new CRK Pacific.

I have a MercWorx 'Shiva,' their dagger, and it's a very well made solid knife. I'd say the Sniper is probably worth the money if that's what you like. Having said that, I also have a Chris Reeves Neil Roberts 'Warrior' as well as several Busse's, and those are all very nice knives as well.

I just got a Vorax today. I have to say I'm a little dissapointed in the fit and finish. The edge, while sharp, has a slight burr on it. Also, the tip is squared and there's a little bit of heat discoloration from the sharpening process. Maybe I'm nit-picking a little, but when you spend that kind of money for a knife, you kinda expect a little more.

Edited to add: It's an awesome knife and I hope to get one of their folders someday.
