Messed up a Cold Steel Long Hunter today

Cool!!! Yall are OK. No, I fully claim responsibility for this one. I will send it in, but it isn't their fault. I had a job I HAD to do, and this knife just paid the price.

Doc

looks like you took a hole puncher to the blade. i would just parallel it with the sander (keeping it cool) and redo it that way. seems the easiest.

What was wrong with that bull anyway?

It looks like that knife is done with its old life as a Cold Steel Long Hunter..... and ready to begin its new life as a DocGP custom Wharncliffe. You can always get a new one, but if you are a dyi project oriented soul, no reason to let that blank canvas get away from you. Also, if you use a grinder, just go slow, and dip in water often, the heat treat will be fine.

Doc,

Cool photos, but what the heck is a necropsy? And I'm assuming the bull is already dead when you're batoning into his chest cavity?

I believe it's the same as an autopsy. I wouldn't have the guts to baton a knife through a 1800lb live bull lol.

Cold Steel knives ain't all that expensive.

Put a little black paint on it, sharpen the serrations and edge leave it as a self defense knife. It would make a great tactical knife y'know. If someone produced that in my presence, I think I'd run!

too bad they're going to replace it, i would love to see how this one would end up after some mods.

Well, it's not like you wrecked a Dozier or something:D... shoulda used a SRK or something similar (Becker Campanion).

A bit OT, but when one is attempting to identify the cause of death, you have to examine the entire animal. Nose to toes, so to speak. Necropsy is when one examines another species....autopsy (auto-self) is when one examines ones own species.

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of how I was using it...just put it up agains the ribs and hit it with a stick. Again, my fault.

I'm interested to hear if CS replaces that for you, I'm impressed.

I never thought I'd say it but  to Cold Steel's customer service.

If it was me, I'd make it into a wharncliffe.

That's what I'd do. I re-ground an El Cheapo Bowie after I broke the tip, and the end (new tip) of the blade ended up so fat that there's no way to sharpen it unless I literally spend hours on a stone. Add to that the fact that you'd end up with a very steep drop point, and I'm not sure you'd be able to use it (the tip) for much.

But - I'd do what DngrRuss1; if CS will replace it, go for it.

thx - cpr
