Messenger Bag Question

All I can see is a picture. It's hard to say. The dimensions are similar to the others, and I can't tell what kind of organizer panel it's got or how internal space is laid out.

If you're looking at the MPB, make sure it has a space large enough for your laptop.

According to Maxpedition's website the MPB can accomodate a laptop, and mine is the standard 14.5" so that shouldn't be a problem. Just wish there were somewhere I could actually handle both bags to see and compare them. The Tenba looks good too, and the video shows the guy whipping out a laptop so I'd be good to go with that bag also.

This brings up a question.....when you have two items of similar quality and usefulness, how do you decide between them - sight unseen??

If you go to the site www.tenba.com and under "products" click on messenger bags and then "small messenger bag" it'll also pull up a video you can watch. The "downside" I see is that it isn't waterproof - but it looks like a do-it-all bag.

According to me, my ruler, and my MPB, the large inside section is 13" long 10" high. You just might squeeze a 14.5" laptop in there, at an angle.

The age old question, how can you tell from pictures, descriptions, other people's perceptions? Best Available Data, then make a choice. If you've done your homework it should be a good choice, if not the best.

Too many choices. :) At least we can say that Maxpedition and Tenba are good quality products. Check your measurements and layout carefully, though.

I have the Timbuk2 Classic messenger it works perfectly for a laptop and all the essential crap that comes with it. This for me normally includes a laptop a smaller camera in a pellican case, cables cell phone charger and the like (as well as a small altoids psk). Id say go with the Timbuk2 if they are super durable and in my experience completely waterproof. You dont necessarily need one of the "laptop" models I use a normal cheapo neoprene case for the laptop and it keep everything nice. I would definitely say to check them out in store first if you can if not a small will hold a 13" laptop or smaller the medium for a 15" and the large for a 17.

On a side note I prefer a messenger style bag to your normal say backpack for your normal edc and have not noticed any back problems. Your mileage may vary if you are the kind of person that likes to carry a LOT or you have one of the monster 500 lbs laptops you might want to look into the backpack carry, there are a lot of good options there too.

Just my $.02

Jive and Infi,
Thanks for the info. Those eagles look nice too...but I keep coming back to the Tenba. I think sometimes, besides the mileage on the bag where the back is concerned, it's mileage on the chasis that's lugging the bag around. I'm getting to the age (probably past it) where I wonder whose knees those are that I'm walking on - MINE can't hurt that much.

PS: Ottawa is one of my all-time favorite cities. Simply beautiful - winter and summer.

Found and looked over the TImbuk2 Laptop Messenger in Medium and really liked it. I was surprised how small the small is - almost like that maxpedition waist pack. I then came home and got a line on one that's going for less than $110 black one I saw last night. I don't usually do that, but this is a pretty good savings on the bag.

I like this "old" style a lot. The new one has the laptop stored in the back separate from the main compartment, which then allows it to be folded open for checking thru the gate at airlines, suppposedly w/o having to remove the computer. I just don't like it...having the laptop slip right into a computer envelope in the pack is a better thing for me. Seems Timbuk2, like a lot of companies, change colors and styles pretty often to stay competetive, though I might like that fold down feature if I traveled by air more often.

I can fit a light jacket and all the computer gear in there without crowding - and without the computer it will be more than large enough for my two day getaways, in fact if careful I could probably do a two-day and have the computer in the bag too. Further, the bag will also fit my SLR sized Nikon Digital along with the computer and proably a light jacket. Perfect size for my needs.

I'll let you know how this turns out and I want to thank EACH of you for the input. Not only was it fun, but it turned me on to other interesting sites. The hardest thing to overcome was the temptation to buy one of those leather bags at "saddlebackleather' - which would last a lifetime and just be pretty cool to carry around. However, 'lasting a lifetime' at my age doesn't mean the same thing as it did thirty or even twenty years ago!

Cheers,
Steve
