Messing about with Spyderco's

Last year I seemed to spend rather a large amount of time taking perfectly good UKPK's and messing with them.

They all stemed from the question that people ask me, 'what do you use a knife for?' My normal answer is to just say 'everything' but that's not very helpful so over a month, I kept a record and artefact evidence (all the bits) of everything that I used my knife for.

It turned out to be a series of three knives; each knife is a week. Each knife is a UKPK that has been modified so that it is possible to see what I have used it for.

I guess they are entirely recycled (as the knives were all second hand) and the handle material certainly was!

This one is 'EDC2'...
Handle - Wrapping paper, pencil shavings, electric flex, curtain material, covered elastic band with human hair, ivy prunings, string.

I'll post some pictures of the others as well, if people are interested...

I would love to see more of your work! I saw the interview with you in one of the knife magazines last month. Really beautiful stuff! I really enjoyed hearing about the creative process you used to inspire these designs. Really nice work, I love what they mean to you.

Grace, that's a very neat piece of art you've created. I would definitely love to see the others.

This one is 'EDC3'...
Handle - tags, aluminium strip, cable tie, glove leather offcut, packaging mesh, cement bag, elastic cord, plastic sand bag.

and then this is all three of them together...

...and then the third one was corrugated board, zip ties, duct tape, biscuit wrapper, parcel tape, Royal Mail envelope, wire mesh, address label and a wrapper from a bar of marzipan divided equally into three parts.

What surprised is how neatly my weeks had divided up. One week seemed domestic, one was mainly doing building work on the workshop and the other was occupied with opening parcels and shipping stuff.

I think that I've got some work in progress pictures somewhere.

Absolutely amazing work. If "messing about" results in knives like that, what sort of work do you turn out when you get serious?

A delightful concept beautifully executed. Thanks for sharing!

They certainly turn the concept of "art knife" on its head :D

beautiful work! amazing display of patience and artistry. i'm well
chuffed to have seen this. (the last part was my brit speak)
thanks for sharing pics

Those are very unique and look great. I don't know how well they would hold up with use...but very nice job on all of them. They look like fine art to me.
