And at a certain point the topic shifted to knives.

He said the Seals have had/used more than one knife over the years, and wouldn't tell me what the current one is like.

Told him I'd check it out online, and he didn't seem to think I'd find anything on it.

It's a fixed blade, in any case.

Any info on it?

spec war types aren't blabby about stuff in general...i'm cigar buddies with a few in the community...i know, but since they're not blabby about their equipment, neither will i be.

Next time I see him, I'll just tell him that he was right... I didn't find anything out about it.

Then I'll just ask him what he likes in a knife...

And please ask which of the previous used had been his favourite.
Would be interesting to know...

I don't know if the knife is issued, but it is a Benchmade 155 Fixed Presidio in the pic.

I know a few guys in Special Forces (2 Seals and one Green Beret), they are also pretty quiet, but they all have indicated in one way or another that most individuals have discretion to select, procure, and use the tools they deem appropriate for the job(s) at hand.

Perhaps they are all feeding me a line of BS to kill the topic, but I have heard it in separate exclusive conversations, and one of these guys has never even met the other two.

I personnal know a couple of Rangers and I asked what kind of knives they used and they said they carried Benchmade.

It wouldn't surprise me if the various branches of the military procure and use that which they deem best for their particular circumstances.

An old friend who passed away not too long ago (Marine, true hero) had his USMC KaBar on his desk.

Never did ask him how many sentries and others he took out with it...

I'm more inclined to believe personal choice has more to do with what they carry. Hhhmm not blabby about stuff? I understand that totally but secretive about a knife they personally like? They could at least let us in on preferred gear. It's not like we would post it on the internet or something. :D

BTW, the former Navy Seal I mention in the first post later became a police officer. He told me that most policemen carry two handguns, while he carries one gun and his NS issued knife. Just ask me why! :D

How do you know this guy was a former Navy Seal? Because he said so? Maybe the reason he didn't tell you what knife the Seals are issued is because he doesn't have a clue. If I had a nickle for every guy that claimed to be a former Navy Seal, I'd be a rich man. I'd go further and say that if I had a nickle for every product claimed to be used by Navy Seals, I could pay off the National Debt.

I spent 24-years in the U. S. Navy and met a few Seals -- mostly in an offical capacity aboard ship. They had their own areas aboard ship (berthing/training) and stuck pretty close to them except when they went to chow and even then they usually had a designated space on the mess decks for them. None of them ran around when off duty bragging that they were Seals.

The Navy Seals (active duty/inactive duty) are a great bunch of guys with impecable qualifications. They know it and are comfortable in that knowledge and don't feel a need to brag on themselves to others outside their community.

My thoughts also.

Either he was a Seal & is not a gear-freak & does not recall the knives used, or he was not a Seal & does not want to out himself.

How do I know? Because...

He didn't tell me. Someone else did. Not so easy to drag stuff out of him. BTW, we're already good friends, who understand each other very well.

Not going any further about who he is. Don't need to.

Thanks for your perspective.

P.S. If I had really wanted to get him to tell me about the knife, I would have succeeded, most likely. I've no doubt he'll fill me in.
