Met a former Navy Seal the other night...

And at a certain point the topic shifted to knives.

He said the Seals have had/used more than one knife over the years, and wouldn't tell me what the current one is like.

Told him I'd check it out online, and he didn't seem to think I'd find anything on it.

It's a fixed blade, in any case.

Any info on it?

I am pretty sure it doesn't have any magical powers, despite his secrecy.

While these kinds of threads can be interesting, they're not really going to give you some secret info that one might feel is out there. As has been said, Specs Ops guys can usually use whatever they want. The majority of them are not knife nuts. Some aren't even firearm nuts, though I believe most are into firearms, while the ones into knives are not nearly a high. They may be very proficient at their use, if needed, but what they use is less important than that they do use it if need be.

I will say that most will come across something they like & stick to it. I have a good friend that I used to work with (Till I left to another Dept). I've also spent considerable time with him & others in the community. They all seem to vary in what they liked.

He's now in his early 60s & still working, although not where he used to & no longer in the Military, of course. He's partial to Cold Steel SRKs & has several Carbon V versions.

It isn't so much a specific model as it's certain parameters. His FBs tend to have 6" or so blades & usually in some type of carbon steel that can be sharpened relatively easily. Handle material isn't as important as that it's grippy (Blood, oil, water, etc makes things amazingly slick).

While some might spend a good chunk of $ on their knives, most don't & for various reasons.

I guess the bottom line is get/use what you want to use & enjoy it. Like most things, there's not one knife that Spec Ops types use. It varies nearly as much as the individuals do.

I guess the rationale behind getting what "real operators" use is that if "such and such" use it then it must be good.

Certainly not a lot of spec ops guys are knife nuts but they probably recognize gear that suits what they will be doing. These guys probably are used to quality gear and can tell within a few seconds if a certain specific item will be good enough for their needs.

From the posts here it seems that their choices are as varied as there are individuals. To me, this just indicates that most of the major knife manufacturers are putting out a product that is more than adequate for most purposes.

The fact, that we as knife nuts favor some brands over other just proves out knife nuttery as indicated by preferrences. So as mentioned, get something you want and enjoy it, no matter that no "real operators" are issued that particular product.

someone watches too much GI Joe

aside from personal preference, knives for spec ops are probably a last priority. as long as it cuts, it's fine. it's used more for a tool anyways than as a weapon, so it's also not a good idea to bring out a super expensive knife just to have it get beat up.

I have a retired special forces guy who trains with me sometimes, we were chatting after a workout and I showed him my sebenza, and a slipjoint, he had about 5 Cold Steel items (we were at his car). He didn't express a lot of knifeknuttery....

WHAT? They don't carry a BuckMaster?

But I've got proof. :D

A retired SPECOPS acquaintance of mine carried two Busse Combat knives when in the sandbox: A Fusion Battle Mistress (10" blade) in his ruck and a Satin Jack Tac (6.5" blade) on his web gear.

This guy is the real deal - SPECOPS when on active duty, Blackwater after ETS.

I seen my son yesterday so I asked him if they were issued knives. He said "kind of". He said the unit hat deployed right before his was issued BenchMade knives. He said his unit was issued Gerber Multi Tools. I seen the GMT and it is the best MT I've seen in a while. Looks like a special made tool.

He basically said when they deploy a person in charge has the option of ordering whatever they feel is needed by the groups going over. They have a list of aproved gear to choose from. Right now BenchMade is the knife of choice.

I have a friend who was in the Green Berets about 10-15 years ago. Today I asked him if they were issued anything in particular. He said that his unit was issued double edged fixed blades with about a 6" blade, but, not being a knife person, he could not recall who made it or what model is was. He said that they could get anything they wanted, they only had to ask for it. Some of the guys in his unit had Kabars, and he said that those who had a reasonable chance of actually using a knife up close and personal (as in taking out a sentry, etc) liked the SOG Pup. He said that large knives are unwieldy for such purposes.

He also said that the option to request anything extended to small arms. If it was being made anywhere in the world, they could requisition it from their armory. Some liked AKs, some liked M14s, he usually used an M4. He does not talk about actual missions, but, based on the part of the world where I know he was deployed, I have a pretty good idea. His brother is a Seal, and saw some interesting action in Afghanistan for the month before the actual invasion.

And what others have said about the real special forces guys is true - he is very soft spoken, mild mannered, and unassuming.

Of course not. I really doubt there's a laser in it to blind the enemy before cutting him up.

What good is an Official Black Ops Tactical Folding Boneshredder (with titanium anchors, titanium lanyard, and titanium spine reinforcement) without the integrated laser guidance system? Sheesh. All REAL Operators know that! :D

most of the SEALs i have met probably carried kitchen knives as when the truth came out they had actually been cooks lol.

I met a guy who knows a guy who has a sister that slept with a guy that was on the same plane as a guy who knows this chick that's sure she's dated a guy that knew a Navy SEAL...

;)

Kind regards,

Jos
