I am building some additional dies for my hydraulic press and am ordering the metal tomorrow. I have access to a 14 inch abrasive cutoff saw. Will this handle 1 inch square stock, 1 inch by two inch rectangle stock and 3/8 by four inch plate? or should I pay to have the cuts made at the metal supplier? Optinions appreciated.

Thanks

John

I don't see why not. I have cut 1" round on a cut off saw no problem whatsoever. Just make sure on the plate that the stock is secured so it doesn't shift and shatter the disc.

As long as the saw will clear that 4" wide piece standing on edge you'll be fine. I've never seen a 14" chop saw that wouldn't....

With the chop saw you run a good risk of burning the steel unless you are water cooled and running slow. Have it cut on a good band saw and you will have no issues.

A chop saw will handle that fine, I sometimes use mine to cut damascus billets that air hardened on me and they are usually 2" - 3" square. I find a chop saw is not very accurate as the disc will wonder a bit, I prefer to use my bandsaw.
