Metal file/saw -- anybody use this?

Cute baby.

But also with all due respect, similarly, I wouldn't prop a baby near a brand new chainsaw, or against the tires of a new car, or against a knife collection or a new saw cut machine, no matter how safe I think I have made it. I guess it's because of the inherent dangers tools may pose to human beings.

Babies are fragile enough as they are, who knows, maybe residual cordite or Hoppes, etc. might be an irritant for very young babies. Baby things for babies, adult things for adults.

Again, no disrespect intended. Just sayin'.

Back to topic, I have a hazy memory of using the metal saw on a nail, to cut off a projection, but as you see I never used it much.

Guys, if it were fully loaded, cocked, and safety off, and she tried to pull the trigger, she wouldn't be able to -- not strong enough. Feelings are one thing, you can feel disturbed if that's the feeling that comes up, but there is no rational concern.

i find the picture disturbing as i have cared for too many children injured or killed by supposedly secured and/or unloaded firearms.

even if there was a one in a billion chance that an injury could occur, that is too high a risk. i would never put a gun near any child, especially for something as stupid as this picture

if the gun has ever been fired it will be contaminated by lead (from both the primer and lead shavings) and possibly antimony, barium and mercury compounds. all very bad for you and especially bad for infants

do you notice the wet fingers touching the grip?

guess where those fingers might end up again

I can magically come up with an answer for all of the lead/Hoppes/cordite worrywarts. I'm not kidding.. The pistol is brand-new never fired right out of the box. :D As far as being unloaded, it's never even had a round chambered. I'm not saying I wouldn't take the same picture with a used gun, but for THIS one, you don't have a leg to stand on. Hah!

dunc5, I'll make sure I file her little nails with my LM Surge file before the next picture, OK?
Back to multi-tools!
My Surge rules. Any questions?

Listen, I won't comment on the creapy aspect of the pic, it is weird. I understand your logic. I agree, the gun is a tool. but quite frankly, your cute kid+ your cool gun= a very bad idea. I don't know what forums that your going to that are "Pro Gun" and think this is a good idea, but I've never found any like that. I can tell you that I am as pro gun as it gets, I will die before I give mine up, and I have a young daughter (9 months) that will get a .22 when she is 8, and I will take her to the range and teach her all she needs to know. But I plead with you, take down the pic. The anti gunners out there don't need any more ammo, and no matter what you say, how you rationalize it, what ever your excuse....they will attack you, and all gun owners for shit like this. We, as gun owners, have to go way out there to make people like us, and see that we are good people. It sucks, but it is just the way it is. Please take the pic down, and don't post it on the web, it's a very bad idea. :(

I think you're right on the money. I will go out on a limb and trust that somebody I do not know took all necesary and available precautions in taking that pic, but it definately presents the wrong imagine to a very vocal (and thus powerful) anti-gun public. Like it or not, they do have a lot of power, and we must respect that power and likewise attempt to fight it in ways they will be most likely to favorably respond to. Its all politics. :barf:

My kind? I see, different opinions make you puke. Well, I'm sorry, it's got to be a tough life for you, with all these people bothering you with their opinions. ;)

I'm out of this thread, cheers.

A mildly disturbing pic of my little gangster in her "hood": ;) (it's unloaded, triple-checked, and muzzle pointed in a safe direction!)

You are an idiot and a troll.

LOL, a troll? I assure you I'm not. A troll would post pics of someone else's kid. That's most certainly mine. It's sad that you folks would take a pic with your child and your favourite sword, but guns are bad. Very short-sighted.
I'm going to respect the thread and try to get back on-topic.

It seems like everytime there's an accidental shooting, someone declares, "I didn't think the gun was loaded."

There is no such thing as "tripple checked," none.

The first rule of firearms safety is: Always Loaded. Always treat all guns as if they are always loaded at all times.

The only time you can treat a gun as if it is unloaded is if it is not a gun, i.e. if it has been taken apart and is in clearly non-functional pieces.

The last rule of firearms safety is: safe and secure. Always store all firearms and all ammunition in a safe and secure manner to prevent it from falling into the hands of unauthorized users, especially children.

A lot of the knee-jerk reactions here are interesting to say the least. That gun is not going to harm that child in a cushioned crib, loaded or unloaded. That child is not going to be able to discharge that firearm for another several years.

I suspect some of the responses so far have been emotional responses that have little to do with rational thinking. Baby + Gun = Corruption by Evil???

That said, Gollnick probably comes closest to my opinion about the pic. The parent is not treating that gun as loaded, as one always should. Lots of ADs occur after someone "triple checked" a firearm.

And the child, while too young to understand what's going on, is on some level getting the wrong message--guns are okay to touch. In my house, as far as my young child goes anyway, guns are NOT okay to touch.

I do not believe that the gun is loaded or that it is going to jump up and shoot someone. I just believe that firearms are either treated with respect or not. I could leave a loaded firearm on the kitchen table with complete confidence that it would either be left alone or cleared and put away, except for my four year old who is still being taught about guns. The others have been taught to respect firearms and treat them with care. There is no way anyone, on this forum or otherwise, is going to convince me that placing a gun in the hands of a small child is treating it with the respect weapons not only deserve, but require. That's just my perspectve.

beautiful child
Im sorry -i beieleve in each to their own but this is something like a few other topics that i just wont keep quiet on

so what does this pic communicate-to me

to me its pairing a deadly instrument that requires maturity and judgment with ...
an infant-and the person who has made the pairing ...well the infant had no say in the matter............

this is like saying something rude to a woman in the workplace and then explaining i didnt mean it that way-so it wasnt offensive

i have to say this strikes me on the same level as child porn in some way...simply using the child inappropriately

im not canadian, but id bet a dollar what youve done is not only inappropriate but illegal

this is the kind of photo that would make national tv..............

sorry theres really nothing you can say to me that can soften this impression-and if your fellow enthusiasts make this a part of thier forum ...two wrongs dont make a right ................

I' ve used the file on my Leathermans a few times, mostly for removing burrs.....Clead, I'm not sure I would have posted that pic, but it really don't bother me. Guess I'm more of a hillbilly then most folks as I grew up around guns. PC=BS

Ok, Back to topic here. I've used my file & saw on numerous little jobs from removing branches, smoothening small surfaces, etc.

One time, the spare key I had for the backdoor suddenly wouldn't fit in the keyhole so I filed the edges a little bit and it worked like a charm. Turns out that key was newly made and some of the edges were still too rough.

Regards Clead. Nice to be back on the boards.

What do you use the Metal file/saw for? Is it primarily for sawing through metal (seems like an uncommon task)?

Is the file like a typical file for smoothing your nails?

I work in tool & die. I carry a LM Surge and use the file and saw (replaced original with a hacksaw and sometimes a diamond blade) almost every day.

As a law-abiding gun owner, I couldn't agree more with the previous posts regarding your photo. We're already facing unforgiving public opinion against the very idea of gun owner's rights. Gun safety is #1 - there should be no room for doubt. Your photo is long past being 'fun', if it ever was. With all due respect to your right to free expression, please consider removing the photo from the web. If I sound 'preachy', so be it, but I feel it's that important.

PS - to those arguing that there's no chance of any harm to the baby, you're completely missing the point: That picture is ready-made 'dream propaganda' for the Anti-Gun activists.
