Metal working question

Two things, neither of which I have tried personally.
The first is chuck up a nail of appropriate size in the press and you will get a spot anneal right where you want to drill. Then drill it.

Old time smiths would drill a hole 90 degrees off of sear engagement surface, and press fit a pin. This would limit sear engagement without changing the actual working surface. Then they would file the pin down until they had the fit they needed. Later, more could be taken off if there was insufficient engagement.

Pretty much exactly what I have done with JB. I have drilled and tapped a 10/22 sear for a set screw to adjust sear engagement so this is not anything new. I did anneal and reharden the 10/22 sear, but it was a much smaller part. Chris

call around local machine shops and see if they have an EDM machine, they can drill your hole with the edm machine and not heat the metal.

You can cut just about anything with carbide! in 30 plus years of being a machinist, I have cut a ton of very hard parts including gun parts! almost all of our machining on manual & CNC machines is done with carbide, it saves us alot of time & expence!
