I was just given a box of leaf springs from a 1929 Model A. They are the front springs. I know there is book somewhere that identifies the steel composition, but I can't find it thus far. My google-fu appears weak because that hasn't worked, either.

Where can I send a piece to for analysis? I think that these would make great period knives with the steel identified as 1929 Mosel A leaf springs. I just want to be sure of the steel so I can heat treat it properly.

Any and all help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Gene

I did find out today that, according to an old Ford manual, they are vanadium steel. I can only hope they are W2.

The springs are less than 2" wide.

Vanadium steel , 1920 ?? Well it wouldn't be W-2.Most likely 6150 with 1 % Cr and enough V to refine grain. Similar in properties to 5160 and 9260.
