Metallurgy questions on triple quench

I would love to see some test results. I have no idea what it would cost. Darren, maybe you could give us an idea. Now, after saying that, I'm still going with the test, test, test theroy. I'll bet Ray didn't just take his heat treat from some lab or theory. I would guess he had done quite a bit of testing before he started wining cutting competitions everywhere he went.

It is possible that everyone will not agree on the "best" heat treating method, even if we had lab test results. I know from my work in the construction industry that what is possible in a lab does not always work in the real world. Still, having a better understanding of what was going on with one quench, multiple quenches and marquenching (we should throw tempering cycles in as well) would take some of the guess work out of testing. Not to mention more fun!!

I checked once about getting micrographs and analysis done on steel samples..... $75 per.

It'd be cool if we could find a grad student in a metals lab..... :)

I agree, Darren, about the critical discussion of data, totally. We always met once a week on Fridays to look at each others' experimental design and data.

Plus, thirty years in laboratories left me with a very critical eye and that old "show me" attitude. It's funny how you start to treat yourself with the same jaundiced eye after awhile. :)

Yeah, I'm a data freak, too, and an incurable science-boy.

Don't get angry and tell me to read all this - cause I'm tied up. You guys got this triple vs. single figured out yet ? I'm gett'n ready to quench one and need to know. :)

Just hav'n fun while on a short break from work. Carry on and I am with you (or wish I could find more time now to be).

I would like someone to explain what is there about the number 3 that is so sacred to bladesmiths. Is it that bladesmiths have three gods and each has to be satisfied ? Three elements , fire steel and water ? 33333?????

 You have angered the gods!
