A follow up on meteorites for knife blades, seems to be at least a little interest.... I myself feel to reluctant to call my meteorite knives functional from my experiences. For example here is what could have- should have -been a fine knife with thick meteorite blade. It broke before I even got a handle on it. There can be fine weak spots, hairline cracks, impurities. I admit I like material With 'character,' which means 'flaws' or inclusions. None in this blade however. I was able to braze it back together, choose not to go for the increased heat of weld. Price of course comes down to ten cents on the dollar. It has a 'look' in fhe right market has some value not worth throwing away.
Another I just finished has mammoth tooth handle. I had a weak spot on the hidden tang weld, so fixed the problem by overlapping both sides with more meteorite, rather then somewhat weak mammoth tooth. This one has a cast spider in copper guard as meteorite pattern reminds me of spider web, but also 'spider' has a certain image connected with magic and the spirit world. Maybe a 'goth,' look? Outter spacey? But just saying, it may or may not come out as you planned. Etching can be interesting. Sometimes muriatic acid, (more for nickel) sometimes nitric (more for the iron) I have to play around. Try it again sometimes. Be sure to use baking soda- neutralize the acid and coat the blade with oil or some protection. I think buying higher grade meteorite, choose careful, could produce a possible working blade - maybe. I would not assume . Anyone else made a working blade want to add anything to the conversation?
