My two cents.
Leave your own knives at home, buy the shortest machete that you can find locally, if you are asked about it say that it is a souvenir, and you have no idea how one could be employed as a weapon. I have spent a few days in Mexico, with no desire to test the local laws myself. But it is very common to see guys riding down the street on bicycles with machetes wedged in the frame on their way to or from work, they are also plentiful in the markets, some are even fancy.
You should be able to find a 12" bladed machete that will be darn close to what you wish to have of your own.
