My family is going on vacation in Mexico (don't remember where exactly). Does anyone know the knife laws there? The best I've found on google is

"It is best not to carry even a pocketknife into Mexico as this can result in a weapons charge if a knife is found on a traveler who is arrested for a separate offense"

So, anyone know anything else?

That pretty much sums it up.I wouldn't carry a knife down there.

Years ago, when I went to Acapulco,I carried a 6" flashlight with glassbreakers on both ends, for some sense of security.

They'll lock you up in a heartbeat down there & throw away the key:thumbdn:...pending ransom,of course;)

Tell them NOT to stray from the resort area & they'll be fine.

This is not legal advice, as I'm not licensed in MX.

I always take a Boker Subcom. It's tiny and my Spanish is good enough to explain why I might need it and to be able to poke fun at the very idea that such a tiny thing could be a weapon. I always carry a flashlight as a koppo and often a Canemasters cane, and, frankly, those are the first things that I'd use to defend myself.

Again, if you stay in the resort area, you're very likely totally safe.

I'm really not too concerned about self defense, as we're going with a tour group. I'm just sweating not having a cutting tool in my pocket at all times.

Which is why I take along the Subcom. OTOH, an old Boker barlow might be even more innocuous.

alright cool. i guess i'll bring a small victorinox. the red plastic handles should look friendly enough.

thanks for the help

The chances are good that you will not have any problems--unless you get into trouble for something else.

Keep your nose clean. Don't cause any problems and no public drunkenness!

I travel all over Mexico frequently and I always carry a knife. I have never had any problems.

Be advised, though, if you are arrested, you do not have any rights and it can be a very unpleasant experience.

it can be a very unpleasant experience.

Indeed. I would also like add in the extremely unlikely event of that happening, be very wary of using the cell toilet/bathroom if you are with other prisoners.
That isn't an attempt at humour either ;), the prisons are something else in these countries.

I live in Mexico at least 2/3 of the year and carry a pocket knife with me almost always. I have never had any issues with any policeman, because I keep it in my pocket. I can offer no legal advice on the matter, but even if you have to speak to an officer, just don't tell him you have a knife.

What would get someone in trouble is using the knife against someone, even if they were attacking you.

Just be careful, and you should have no problems.

ah, thanks. I should have said that I've already gone and returned. I carried my cheap S&W SWAT in case it got lost or confiscated, but I had no problems whatsoever. The border was actually a lot easier than I imagined. They just asked me questions and didn't even check anything.

I work in Mexico City Mexico once a month. The last time I was there I entered the a hotel to meet a client and I had to pass through security because the president was in the building. I had my Kershaw Leek in my pocket. I handed it to security along with my keys and they told me that I had to go put the knife back in my room and that I couldn't carry it. I didn't get in any trouble, but they did ask me to put it in my room. I don't know if that was because the president was there or if it was just because of the laws there.
