So I met some guys earlier this year where I work who were very generous and gave a nice surplus of Westinghouse black micarta BLOCKS. Ever since I got them, I've wanted to give back to the community here at BladeForums--truly the generosity in knowledge and materials is inspirational. SO... my idea had been to give away a block to someone here, however after BenRT's recent thread showcasing his hawk/knife combo for a solider being deployed, I decided to take it up a notch.

I would like to give this block of micarta to someone who will use at least a chunk of it for a handle on a knife they're willing to donate to an active duty soldier..
.

It's 4.75" by 2" by 2". Here's an example of what I finished up like:

So there it is! If you're interested, post your proposals here. If the competion gets too tough, we may have to have a vote for the best idea!

Id gladly participate, If I thought my knives were worth donating even yet.. Perhaps in the future I can get in on something like this. Looks like some great material to work with. Good luck guys.

Just a soldier? There's active duty airmen too. And us EOD techs are self proclaimed knife whores. :D

Langadune - I'm in! I've already donated two pieces to active duty soldiers and I'd happily do it again. And yes, Canada(that huge swath of land and ice to the north of the U.S.) actually does have more than two active duty military personal amongst the population.:p

A huge karma-inducing initiative ya got going here sir. Wonderful idea.

Very cool indeed, if I had the time to get this done sooner than 2 months from now I would be in. I wish a day had 36 hours! I'm backing myself into a corner with projects already, but I love the idea. I've spoken to a few makers previously about donating knives for military and it seems as if the knife going directly to a soldier does more good than a charity auction or the like.

All I will say is, if anyone is looking to donate to a military charity in the future, do your research. Non profit tax forms are public and some probably wish theirs could be buried forever. There is always a cost of operation, but some are just outlandish.

Hopefully a serviceman (or woman!) gets a knife that will be put to good use. I may have to steal your idea in the future, though. I have some different materials that have been sitting for quite some time and could probably be put to better use than me passing them over for other projects. This has the idea blood flowing again, thanks!
Regards,
Justin

Does Canada count? ... if so,I'll bite.but it's just easier for the shipping if I donate on this side of the border. There are a couple that want a knife that have kids and wives that keep them from spending money on one of mine themselves so I'll find a good home for one.

I have two sons at Ft. Bragg training for S.F. One went in straight from basic and now he's done with Combat Medic school. The other (baby brother) already spent a year in Afghanistan, and when he came back he said, "It's time to get out of the big army and into the little army." He's most of the way through SF Weapons.
The knife he carried in Afghanistan was the same one he used in SERE- he said that out of his group it was the only one of all the knives that was still going strong without a sharpener at the end, after a bunch of skinning and other misc, bushcraft.
I don't have a photo of it, but it's one of my early ones out of 440C, with a synthetic handle.
His big brother needs one now before he goes to SERE training, and I'm out of Micarta!

Thanks for your interest so far guys. I'm not ruling out anyone's ideas just yet. Being American, I'm naturally prejudice towards American servicemen/women, but Canadians are our brothers and sisters as far as I'm concerned. Keep em coming. I think I'll try to have a final decision made by next week.

Well, I've made my decision...

Does Canada count? ... if so [snip] There are a couple that want a knife that have kids and wives that keep them from spending money on one of mine themselves so I'll find a good home for one.

rustyrazor, as I mentioned above, I respect our neighbors to the north who serve. However, I will always have a prejudice in favor of America servicemen... er persons.

So, I decided on both. I have another block I'm willing to give. rustyrazor, if you will send me your mailing address, I'll get the block on it's way. I ask only that you thank those who serve and post lots of pics.

Just saw this, it's a great feeling helping our service men and woman out. Looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with!
