I just ran into this http://www.gunaccessories.com/Spyderco/Lockbacks.asp while looking for other Spydercos.

I had never seen a Micarta handle Byrd (plain and PS). Are those new?

The ONLY hit when you run a search for 'Micarta Byrd' on BF is a 2005 thread with less than 10 posts.

I would think there would be more talk about this.

So? Which is it? Old, new?

:)

The micarta Byrd's were the first Byrd models. IIRC, there were some problems with fit & finish, and Spyderco didn't make that many and discontinued the model. And, it was copied as well.
So, from a Byrd history perspective, it's an interesting model.

Name of it was the Harrier, you might find more threads here, and on the Spyderco factory forum, by searching on that. Whatever else may have been sub-par about the fit and finish on them, the micarta looks great, mostly because it is rounded rather than flat, which allows the "grain" to show.

Edited to add: Here's one. It's probably the granddaddy of them all, where Sal introduced the Byrd line...

Interesting.

From reading all the acclaim the $25 G-10 Byrds have received you would have thought Mr. Glesser snapped his fingers
and Presto, quality/performance/value.

I guess it REALLY is hard to achieve the current Byrd levels of quality when even MR. Glesser got a strike on his first (Byrd) swing.

Thanks for the info.

So... this one is definitely in the DISCONTINUED-UNLOVED bin.

As you well know disco Spydies usually go up in value. At the very least collectors/fans f the brand try to make sure they get one at discount/clearance prices.

But since this thread is dropping like a rock and I see no further comments... This Micarta Byrd must be the red headed Byrd stepchild.

Hmm, it must have been really bad!

Come on, there must be SOMEONE here that bought it and has something good to say about it. I'm sure Mr. Glesser would not put a 'bad' pocket knife in the market , specially not at that intro MSRP.

I own one of these first Byrds ( the BY-01 Harrier). It's not as sharp or as
well made as the newer Byrds.
BTW, does anybody know, if there was a BY-02 ?
(The Byrd CaraCara is BY-03).
