This is a topic which I'd expect has been covered before. After running a search just now however, I got plenty of results but none (I could see at least) which seemed to cover what I have in mind.

What are the relative merits of these two grip materials?

Well, as far as I am concerned, G10 is somewhat tougher and from previous experience I think it can be made a little grippier, and Micarta looks better. That's not to say that Canvas or Linen Micarta aren't tough, because they are. My preference is for Micarta, because I think it looks nicer and is tough enough for anything that I am going to put it through.

According to Strider Knives, there are some chemicals that micarta absorbs that g10 will not. That an the extra toughness are in G10's favor. As the wise Keith said, Micarta is much better looking, and is tough enough for a knife handle. Anything you do that is damaging the micarta will be damaging the blade too! Micarta is very tough.

G10 offers a (slightly) lighter weight, but looks "plasticky" when it is not well-textured... linen micarta, most peoples' preference, is easier to shape, looks better (layers visible when handle is contoured), and when bead-blasted starts to get more grippy although starts to lose its fancy looks... canvas micarta doesn't look like linen... and is often textured for grip, kinda like G10 in many cases, although as the others above said, not quite as tough. All are good in that clothing does not get hung up on the material, allowing for quick draws... if carry/concealment/SD is a factor for you. Overall, straight-up looks, go linen mic; matte-style looks and more grip, go beadblasted linen; need even more textured grip, canvas; straight-up durability and light weight, G10... note that in most applications G10 comes in thin slabs... price rises dramatically if it's a block. Micarta is plentiful and affordable.

Thanks guys, for the informative responses.

I must be unusual, but think I prefer the look of (well done) G10.
