Well I finally got a drill press so I continued with my knives. After drilling the holes and pinning, I went ahead and did rough shaping on micarta handles.

After a few minutes, the belts cutting power significantly dropped. I doubt the belts are getting worn that quick, and there is ton of micarta dust build up/caking up on the belt.

Is the solution to get those rubber belt cleaners like this: http://popsupply.bizhosting.com/rubber_belt_cleaners.html

Yep when grinding wood or micarta they are the way to go,If you need something today the bottom of an old tinney shoe will work.

Yes and the trick is too have the cleaner nearby and clean often because once the heat sets it too the belt, it will not clean out as well! You can buy those anywhere from your hardware, local building supply, etc., or like it was mentioned if you have an old pair of gum sole shoes laying around the soles of them work same way! :D
They also help when sanding metal!!!!!!!!

I have had some luck using lugs hacked off of old snow tires. Shoes too, softer the rubber the better.

Yes, they do help. Very helpful for wood/micarta, somewhat helpful for steel. Mine stays right next to my grinder and I use it every few passes. Like using a file card, it's a good habit to get into.

Horse stall mat? Sounds interesting, I've heard good things about using that for handle scales... nice to hear it's good on your belts.

Wow, I just bought the rubber belt cleaner and it works great!

Yes, my file card is near and dear to my files.

here's a quick snap shot of what I have so far. this is my first attempt.
