Micarta finishing question

I decided to try using paper micatra for the scales on a small EDC. I contoured the front of the scales and have them sanded and ready to glue on. Do I buff the fronts of the scales prior to putting them on or can it wait till they are on the knife? What is the best way to finish and buff this material? Thanks in advance.

Hand sand and buff the fronts of the scales before gluing them on. It's easier that way. I like to finish white paper micarta by hand sanding to 1000 grit, oiling lightly, and buffing with white or pink rouge. If any scratches persist, spot sand them out and oil again, then buff. I like to oil before buffing as I find it helps the compound stick to the surface less.

I would recommend most light machine or household oils- WD40 or Liquid wrench worked OK in the past, but I'm staying away from spray oils now, as they can have ill effects on things as well. I've been using light turbine oil, from the local Ace, sold in a little squeeze bottle, for general stuff like this. It works nicely to oil blades, as well.
3-in-1 or even vegetable oil should work nicely, in a pinch.

Good advice Salem. I would also recommend using a little paste wax (Renaissance wax is my go-to) prior to the final buffing. It gives it a nice sheen.
