Hey guys im wondering, when your done glueing you slabs of cloth/jeans/etc , and you clamp or you put it in a press and when it is dried, how would you show off the pattern of the layers.

I know its a dumb question, like would you sand it flat from a corner and diagonally sand it down? or how would u do it? Im confused

Making Mycarta is not as easy as it sounds. Apparently, you have to develop the "knack" for it. I tried a couple of weeks ago...it was pretty much a disaster.:grumpy: I used burlap and fiberglass resin, and used 3 C-clamps to squeeze the stuff between two metal plates. I squished most, if not all, of the
resin out of the burlap....stuff dripped everywhere. I think you need to make a form for it, so that the resin doesn't get squished out of the material.

oooh..but im wondering how would you sand it, and how would u show off the patterning..not really into how hard micarta is to make..no offence Troop..i know its really hard and i know im gonna fail my first time but at least i have to get by that first or second time in order to succeed?

Just think of it like a cloth Damascus and twist it or do other wild things while it is curing then sand it down just like grinding off Damascus.
Good Luck,
Bruce

so i basically just sand it vertically down and it should reveal the beauty within?

(ive never worked with damascus or even know how its down, i only know what it looks like and i know its pricey lmao)

flat layers show handle contoring well but if your not goigntot do much shapign then do a twist or burlish layup to show more contrast

i like the burl block way butit has taken me a about 2 years to get to the point i am now

AES is who i first saw doing it not sure if googling "beans micarta" wil return the pages you want
