Micarta or G10

In my opinion, the worst part about G10 is the bright colored options that make the knives look like toys.

I miss the days when Busse had a bunch of micarta options, like different colors of paper, linen, and canvas. Apparently G10 is popular because almost all the micarta options have been phased out. Sad, but I guess if that's what the market wants then that's the route they'll take.

+1 for micarta.. though the black g10 on the BADs made me a fan of G10 again

I definitely agree that the black G10 BADs are pretty cool. The handles definitely feel grippier than most G10 I've handled, and the dark grayish tint is pretty neat looking.

Black G10 is definitely the least toyish looking of the bunch.

Canvas Micarta +1

I have played a bit with the G-10, handled, fondled, gripped and held.

I have done this at two shows where Skunk represented Busse.

As well as playing with several of the smaller Busse knives at BubbaThud's House.

So far I do not care for the G-10, seems slippery to me.

Come on, you guys can't really feel a "softer" sensation with micarta - it's just your imagination. Both Micarta and G-10 are both as hard as hell. I prefer the Busse black/tan or black /green g-10 handles. Best looking handles in the world.

I only recently felt G-10 for the first time with the SAR5.

My impression is that it is much heavier, and would be slicker when wet.

I prefer micarta.

I agree with Grim. I prefer micarta because it reduces a little bit of weight, adds more grip for me, and tough enough.

Technically not, I said I like both equally! :p :p :p

I wish someone would step up and compare two of the same blade, one with micarta and one with G10 to see if G10 actually is more slippery when wet/oily/bloody/snotty/whatever, or if its all in our head...

Noss showed us it's tougher than nails, so it's durability sure isn't in question.

I know personally, I wouldn't ever buy hand smoothed micarta or G10, in their textured form I can't see either of em actually letting you down...!

Alex, I think you are forgetting about the little fibers that stick out in Micarta... If it's canvas, you have exposed canvas... The least "grippy" is the paper... I have felt grippy textured G10 like Emerson folders. But, the Busse's are textured not the same.

+1 on Micarta! Lighter, warmer, grippier & more comfortable.

G10 looks better. :D

On a user greater than 5" micarta all the way. On a smaller user I'm happy with G10 because there's less of a weight penalty and I'm not going to chop with it.

I had 2 G10 GWs and 1 micarta GW. I've sold both of the G10 ones. They were slicker when wet....to me they didn't even feel as secure in the hand when dry.

My favorite is the standard rough-finished micarta. Both polished micarta and G10 are somewhat slippery (I'm comparing a micarta A2 mean street and a G10 custom shop steelheart - worlds different, but what's in the drawer next to me). G10 seems to take a higher polish and show more intense colors, hence the plastic/toy look.

I do like G10 on folders - Spyderco texture is great. Also have a Krein with nice G10 - subdued and grippy.

I have had a couple of ICC knives which have sand blasted micarta which leaves a much grippier feel on the micarta. I think that's great for tactical knives. The g-10 on Busse is textured so that's pretty good for a grip. Also the fusion handle has that kinda hook at the end of the handle which is good for retention. The magnum handles have a swell which is also a plus factor for retention. I like to tie a little parachute cord loop that goes on the end of the handle . The pinky finger goes through the loop as if it where a Karambit and this is really great for handle retention. I think the "purtiest" is the mixed g-10. If you sand the g-10 it gets some swirls that in my opinion ruin the look. It makes the handle look like a 60's lava lamo. I hate that.FWIW

For me - on bigger knives it's definatley micarta - mainly because it's lighter than G-10. Almost all busses are heavy knives and G-10 handles make them even more heavy. Too heavy for me. However I like the looks of G-10, but I would choose those slabs only on small knives because of the weight. I have Fence Fried Warden with G-10 scales and I love it, but it's as heavy as my Lep Warden - which has a bit thicer blade and noticebly thicker micarta handles. So it's generally micarta for me.

My all-time favorite for handle grip is the diamond-quilted canvas micarta on an E-handle Battle Mistress. I found that the diamond quilted texture distributed the force of my grip across mutliple small points so that no partciular part of the knife dug painfully into my hand, but the grip was incredibly secure. We got it wet; it stayed a secure grip.

Textured G10 handles are not quite as secure as the micarta I've held, but they don't bite into your hand so much, which is better for, say, kitchen work. I find smooth handles very slippery for a user, regardless of material. I got to fondle some of PapaThud's paper micarta, and while I too think that paper micarta and satin finish blades win the best dressed award, so to speak, I found paper micarta to be the most slippery of the lot, so I would probably use it for cutting wedding cake and then let it rest in the safe :D

LadyThud,
I've only one like that, a SH-E so I took it out and I have to agree the feel is good. I can't bring myself to use it yet so I sorta lost the grip sensation. (in the safe for too long)
Micarta rules for my hands.

Interesting thread - I have been wondering how the 2 compare, especially how they feel in the hand. My user SHBM has smooth micarta, and I like it. The Res-C handles are my favorite for comfort.

Skunk may argue this point but sometimes you can’t beat your good wood.

I've handled canvas, paper, and linen micarta's as well as g10 so far, and of them all I prefered canvas micarta simply because it's grippier. the paper micarta and g10 (the two examples I had) were of equal slipperyness.
