Dear Craftsmen,

I had a question regarding a possible handle conversion. I recently acquired a Cattaraugus 225q. It's is pretty good shape--even the leather washers, which is pretty rare. However, I am pretty sure the tang is a bit rusty/ needs cleaning, and there is a little wiggle in the guard. I was wondering if anyone would be willing/able to remove the handle, clean up the tang, and replace the handle with a micarta or hardwood one? The original guard can be kept and reintegrated into the new handle if necessary. Keeping with the original handle dimensions/ style would be fine, except the new handle could extend to the end of the tang, minus the original butt/ pommel. Please let me know how you'd plan to attach/secure the new handle, and whether or not a lanyard hole could be added to the end.

Tell me what you think, what it may cost, possible turn around time, etc. Thanks for you consideration. Here is a pic of the knife (fixed blade):

Hmmm... I did a stacked leather handle on mine. Since I don't have a mill, making a 2 piece handle is out.

Thanks for writing me back CM; sorry, I didn't realize micarta was not an option, I assumed it was in after looking over the custom knives you made. I even have a piece of lignum vitae I thought of sending you as possible handle material. If you can shoot me an email with your thoughts about cleaning up the tang and a new stacked leather handle I'd appreciate it--thanks again.

Yeah, a channel would need to be milled in both slabs for the tang to fit.

Understood--OK, the let me know about the leather option. Thanks, Anthony

Looks like yours has a butt cap that mine is missing. If you can get that off, disassembly is easy. The tedious part is cutting out leather squares with a hole in the middle and slopping epoxy between each one as you stack and press.

Oh, OK, yeah, getting the butt off was what I hoped you had experience with!

OK, fair enough... I may need to figure out a different fit or leave it as is. Thanks CM--I appreciate your time. On a related note, what do you think of a CM custom with the same general specs, but full tang and either my lignum or micarta for scales---what would that set me back. Maybe 52100 steel?

Even better... I just got some .168" S7 in today. I'm thinking 300 with kydex.

That's pretty tempting--my only concern with s7 is it's corrosion resistance--I intend to process lots of bloody things (animals) and use it during cook-outs/ camping. Any alternative to S7 available?

Yes! Can you give me a clear idea of the rest of the specs; I'm thinking 6"-7" blade, 4.5" -- 5" handle. A subtle swedge, 2"-3" at the tip. How about the grind? FFG or hollow--or saber?

Have to get some things done--will check this thread later tonight--thanks CM. Looking forward to updates.

I do flat chisel grind almost exclusively. I run a 1/3hp 1x42 grinder that isn't capable of hollow grinds.

That's right! Totally forgot. Cool--I like the chisel grind just fine. I carry an Emerson Super 7 as my edc. Let me know the rest of the details (with black micarta scales) when you can. Is a sketch possible? Thanks again, Anthony

Sure, I got black canvas micarta. I'll try to draw up a profile when I get home. Currently at a residential rehab as part of a speaker panel.

Cool man--I've got dojo tonight... gotta get my fight on! I'll check back tonight--keep fightin the good fight Matt!
