Micarta vs G-10 & other thoughts

I prefer G-10, IMO it looks better and seems to be more inert, for lack of a better word when exposed to nastiness.

I like the feel and look of micarta best. I think it is easier to work with also, no glass fibers to worry about. It also isn't as shiny, which gives it a "old school" look, plus it ages much nicer with use. Just my personal opinion. :D

Is'nt mircarta the tougher of the two as far as durability goes?

G-10 is the stronger of the two!!! I work in the turbine industry and we use G-10 & Micarta (canvas, linen and paper). G-10 is used basically due to it's ability to withstand higher operating temps but it strength is also a huge facture. With it's construction of a epoxy resin and glass the mix is alot tighter in cell make up than with micarta. I have taken micarta and G-10, broke both of them while hammering on them being used as driving wedges doing turbine work. The G-10 will last longer before spliting out.

With that said though, Micarta is STILL very tough and will outlast all materials (that I have seen) for handles in the knife industry IMHO. I would never hesitate using Micarta period.

fwiw....

I had a folder with g10 on it...had small scale grooves in it for grippiness... not like Busse knives grips at all.....anyway, I carried it and used it for a couple of years...I gave it a rest after the g10 started to "get smooth" from wear. Started to slip a bit in my hand.

I was actually quite surprised that it wore so quickly.

Next step would be to rough it up with sandpaper I guess.

I think I prefer micarta.

Slim

I like the feel of the canvas micarta (more warm and better grip), but I prefer the look of G10 (which tends to absorb less liquids and other shit). Difficult to chose but I would go with G10.

How strong is Black Paper compared to the others?

I believe black pepper is linen, which is weaker than canvas and g10.

For me, I prefer g10. I dont like how micarta absorbs stuff and gets really dark looking like wet paper. I have it on my rats, and although its okay, I much prefer g10. I never had problems with the grip or fel of g10 and find it very attractive and strong.

My preference...

Linen Micarta when it has a machined pattern
Canvas Micarta when it's smooth or hand shaped
G-10 and Paper Micarta for looks.

As for the strength of paper, linen, & canvas...

Think of in terms of the fibers in each as the resin used should be the same.
Canvas has the thickest fiber weave, linen with a thinner fiber weave, and
paper... well no real weave and small tiny fibers. But the resin does most of
the work in keeping all the fibers locked into place. G-10, has a stronger,
more dense resin/epoxy and a stronger fiberglass fiber weave.

in order of preference:

Res-C

Canvas Micarta

Any other kind of Micarta;)

G-10

I know it is blasphemy but if i had a choice i would want SY Res-C mudder type grips on everything:)

For me it seems a lot depends on the texturing given the particular knife. I owned a crk&t fixed blade with extremely grippy G10, it probably had the most grip of any knife I have owned, to the point where it would hurt the hand when used overly long. The swamp rat RDM G10 texture did not agree with me and the knife felt extremely slippery in hand. The Waki G10, however, has a really good grip without being overly rough. My impression is micarta tends to be less dependent on surface texture, tending to be more uniform between and among manufacturers. G10 seems to have the edge on overall resistance to aging and showing wear and will have more vibrant colors for a longer duration.
