I'm think about using micarta for some knife handles but have never used it before was wondering if you had any advice on it or any precautions i need to take to use it (fumes dust etc.) thanks

Wear a respirator and vacuum up after you're done. Go slow, use sharp belts or you'll burn it. Depending on how much of a sheen you want on it, sand it to 400 for matte smooth, 800 for a higher sheen. Buff with white compound for a nice polish.

Something like this. You want protection from fumes as well as the product / dust. Ask for an alternative at the store if cost is a concern, but specify that you need organic vapor protection as well as fine dust.
