Micartas on the BK1

Sorry, no pic yet. (what a let down)

UPS was trying to deliver to wrong address, but, with Wendy's help, we got them straightened out, and they finally arrived today (Thanks Wendy!)

Well, due to the .250 thickness of the BK1, the stock allenhead screws are a wee bit short.

The stock screws are 5/8" and just barely show thread when being assembled.
So the nuts don't grab even a thread.

I'm going to run out the my well stocked hardware store, and procure some 3/4" screws. I knwo they have allenhead screws, just hoping I can get them in 3/4"
If not, I may shoot for brass or SS for an "old world" traditional look.

I will post pics later tonite...promise!

So, for anyone contemplating adding the Micarta scales to the BK1, plan on finding slightly longer screws.
There might be enough material on the new handles to further countersink them, but I don't want to remove too much material and weaken the handles.

wish me luck.

pics to follow

OK, so its not just me. Whats up with that? If the standard screws don't fit why don't they send new ones? I had the same experience and I have to get to the hardware store also to pick up a new set.

Odd.

(The stock screws are 5/8" long, just a hair too short)

Is the same thing true of the BK7? I just ordered the Micarta grips for my BK7 today.

Another user on the forum, that I had an email exchange about this problem had no issues with the BK7 he bought micarta handles for because I asked him. He was able to just use the stock screws.

Lucky you. :p ;) :grumpy: :D

It's pretty easy to explain.....once you are confronted with the issue.

The others, like the BK7 are .188 thick steel.
The Micartas were made specifically for the BK77, so they fit fine, with the existing screws.

The BK1 is .250 thick , so the threads aren't quite long enough to grab the nut on the other side.

BK9 is .210 thick steel, so the stock screws MIGHT grab, but also may not.
I measured that approx. 1/8" of thread is needed (extra) for the BK1...that would be an additional .125 in length.

Try Ace Hardware. Lowes has a fairly good selection too.

I can get the black 3/4" allenhead screws, locally, if anyone has trouble finding them.
PM me.

I understand the math. I don't understand why they don't send the screws with the handles. :D I picked up some stainless ones. I think it will look cool.

I looked at SS, but, the heads looked to large to fit into the recesses in the handle material.

I was thinking brass would also look "old school" , but, didn't find any that would work.

Post pics, pleez, when installed.

is that a compass on that lanyard stop? if so where did you get it? if you don't mind me asking.

Well this kinda sucks. The SS screws work fine but they are just a little to long. If I was a lefty my fingers would probably get cuts from the constant rubbing because they are just below or at the surface. I will probably need to grind them down eventually.

The 5/8" are too short and the 3/4" are too long for the BK1. Still, all in all I can live with it the way it is for a while.

Web2, wow, great idea! I wish it was a compass!
I'll have to start looking around for that size. What it is, one of those little spring loaded cord stops liek you'd find on a tent line or a hat string.
But, great idea on the compass.

kr1, OK, with those screws, if your SS heads are well recessed, then you mgiht be able to put a washer at the head end, just under the head, or even a small O-ring.
That will rasie the head a little, and bring the end of threads back a hair, maybe keeping them from protruding out the other side.
I know exactly what you are talking about.

the other thing to do, is take the screw, put a nut on it. screw the nut on down toward the head. Then take a dremel with a cutting wheel, or a file, and remove a tad bit of length. when you remove the nut, it will UN-bugger any badness left on the end of the thread.
if it were, me, I'd try the O-ring/washer approach , first.

Good Luck, let us know how it goes.

I have thought of both of these methods and I think I am going to try the dremel. I think the washers will just raise the heads enough to annoy me on the side that is OK now and not pull the threaded ends down far enough, so it will p_ss me off even more. :D

Thanks,
KR

Of course, there is always answer C.

Go find the 3/4" allenhead screws. You can use that as last resort. :)

good luck with that dremel.

I want to buy the Becker Micarta Handles for my BK7 but need the product code or number for my german dealer.

Wicked,

I ordered a pair yesterday. They should be here in a week. If you can wait that long, and IF they come with paperwork and a part number, I will give you the number.

Alternatively, you could call Camillus Customer Service/Sales in the US at 315-672-8111 and ask for Wendy or Maureen and I am sure they could help you.

@ Wicked

are you ordering via an online store that offers BK&T or a regular store?

If you're ordering micarta grips online through a german shop, would you be so kind to give an url? BK&T is hard (that should probably be NOT) to find here in Belgium and I would really like the micarta ones on my BK7...

For my European friends:

The part number for the Micarta scales is K5994A00 and K5994B00. Left and right side numbers I guess.

The web address is: www.camillusknives.com.

Good luck.

Bill

P.S. I just received my scales today for my BK7 and they went on without a hitch, using the same screws

@SAK,
thanks for your help  and post a pic when you have a minute.

@ pim
I contacted camillus directly and will order directly from them.
This seems to be easier as through the dealer.

@Willieboy.
Thanks for the part numbers it now will be easy to get the scales.:D
Good to hear the they fit so well

Thanks

Wicked

I have put the Micarta handles on the BK9 and the BK2 with no problem, but as mentioned earlier in this thread the BK1 is thicker. I found a 11/16" 10-32 stainless steel screw that works great on this knife.
