Well, Michael Jackson's memorial was held yesterday. Because strangeness and oddity will follow Michael Jackson from birth to death, he has no brain. That's right; the brain was withheld by the medical examiner's office so they can run some tests on it once it... er... hardens up sufficiently for them to do so. I mean, ick.
I have to admit I was pretty harsh in my criticism of Jackson, both when he was alive and immediately following his death. Then I saw heard a clip of his daughter, speaking at the memorial service. That kind of put it in perspective for me. Sure, Michael Jackson was a freak. He was a deeply troubled, mentally unsound man who was on more perscription drugs than Elvis, apparently. Were he still alive today, we'd still think of him as a freak, and we'd still wonder if he was a kid-toucher.
Death has somehow redeemed him in the eyes of many. The Saturday after this happened I was standing on the sidewalk and a car passed me. The windows were down and the car was full of young people, probably heading out to party. They were blasting "Billie Jean" as they drove off. I was so surprised I actually "Twittered" about it. Death has somehow absolved Jackson of his earhly sins. It has made it okay to listen to his music in public. It has almost made him "cool" again. Sales of his music were up 700 percent in the days following his passing.
Me, I don't know what to think about that poor, disfigured man-child anymore. He used to occupy a category in my mind that read, "possible child molester," and I thought no more of him. Now when I think about him I hear his daughter's voice breaking as she talks about how wonderful Daddy was. It's too much to bear. I'd rather just listen to "Thriller" and not think about the man behind the music at all.
