Well, Michael Jackson's memorial was held yesterday. Because strangeness and oddity will follow Michael Jackson from birth to death, he has no brain. That's right; the brain was withheld by the medical examiner's office so they can run some tests on it once it... er... hardens up sufficiently for them to do so. I mean, ick.

I have to admit I was pretty harsh in my criticism of Jackson, both when he was alive and immediately following his death. Then I saw heard a clip of his daughter, speaking at the memorial service. That kind of put it in perspective for me. Sure, Michael Jackson was a freak. He was a deeply troubled, mentally unsound man who was on more perscription drugs than Elvis, apparently. Were he still alive today, we'd still think of him as a freak, and we'd still wonder if he was a kid-toucher.

Death has somehow redeemed him in the eyes of many. The Saturday after this happened I was standing on the sidewalk and a car passed me. The windows were down and the car was full of young people, probably heading out to party. They were blasting "Billie Jean" as they drove off. I was so surprised I actually "Twittered" about it. Death has somehow absolved Jackson of his earhly sins. It has made it okay to listen to his music in public. It has almost made him "cool" again. Sales of his music were up 700 percent in the days following his passing.

Me, I don't know what to think about that poor, disfigured man-child anymore. He used to occupy a category in my mind that read, "possible child molester," and I thought no more of him. Now when I think about him I hear his daughter's voice breaking as she talks about how wonderful Daddy was. It's too much to bear. I'd rather just listen to "Thriller" and not think about the man behind the music at all.

It was heart breaking when his daughter spoke. I had never heard a MJ song until he passed and I watched Thriller on youtube. He wasn't that bad when he was younger. I just wish I knew what caused the man to go freakin weirdo. But like I've said from the beginner he was odd to us but to his family he was a son, brother, father, cousin, ect. and they will miss him.

Amusing yesterday, on NPR's Talk Of The Nation they had two guys who were supposed to be discussing Jackson's "legacy" and they got into a shouting match comparing Elvis to Jackson....

Personally, the lad didn't do a thing for me; never did. Still, true giants of the entertainment industry respected his talent and work ethic, so I guess he had something going for him.
At the same time, it's well-observed that the line between genius and insanity is paper-thin in many cases, and no doubt he had his demons.
By most accounts, an abusive childhood; that sort of thing tends to have far-reaching implications.

Couple that with super-wealth, a tribe of sycophantic hangers-on, an isolated existence in his own little Disneyland...It's a scene we've seen played out many times before.

I'd wager you had heard a MJ song, even if you didn't know it was a MJ song. :D

I and everybody I knew when I was in first grade around 1981 listened to MJ. I made my mom buy me the jacket with all the zippers. He was the big thing then. After that he started getting weird and you were embarrassed to admit you owned an MJ casset or record. When I heard he died I was like oh well. Then I saw the videos of Billy Jean, Beat it , Thriller that night and I felt kind of bad. I realized the guy I thought was so great during my childhood was dead. I don't know what he did in his later years, but if he did those things people say he is paying for it right now. I really hadn't thought about Mj for years, he was actually kind of dead for me. Cause the guy who died was not the same guy I grew up listening to.

It seems like it's been known for some time that the more talented you are as an entertainer the more troubled you likely are. Jackson is just one in a long line of talented entertainers that weren't wired to do much else.

'What a splendid art! And what a sad profession!'
Georges Bizet, on music

He'll be back. A year from now the entertainment media will dig him up again like they did Anna Nicole Smith, Princess Diana, etc., etc.

This is true for me as well. The MJ I listened to produced Thriller, Billie Jean, PYT. He's been gone for a long time now.

I heard on the radio driving to work this morning, that MJ is going to have his casket entombed in hardened concrete. They are worried about his body being stolen according to the story.

I bet you could sell it on ebay for alot of money. Lol. Seriously though, I bet there are people out there that are probably planning it right now.

I know people dig up the dead but that is SICK. That is the reason 2Pac was not buried because of fans wanting his body so bad.

I have to respectfully disagree Phil. Alien Ant Farm covered "Smooth Criminal" in 2001. It hit the top of the charts in the US, Australia, and New Zeland, and hit #3 in the UK. A local bar band here in Missoula covers "Billie Jean" every time they play and it brings the house down.

I'd rather just listen to "Thriller" and not think about the man behind the music at all.

I agree. Many mourning his death have missed him for a long time, but were unable to express those feelings while he was still alive.

nobody really knows what michael was like for real at all only what the papparazzi fed us, i don't like or dislike him as a person cause i truly don't know jack about him or if those accussations were real or somebody trying to get his money and what is like to be famous or wealthy like him but i did like his dancing and some of his music.

The man could sing
The man could dance
He made people happy with his music
I NEVER heard a MJ song that didn't make me smile for a sec
He is the epitomy of "feel good music"
And the production side of his music was pretty groundbreaking

I watched the whole trial on TV
I think the justice system worked in this case
Too MANY reasonable doubts..IMHO
To me he was AQUITTED, so he is not a molester
I stand by decision of the jury
It's the American Way and, although, not perfect, it is the fairest way....

I admire you Phil for taking such a position of empathy
I felt the same way after seeing Paris speak
Her face and voice haunted me the rest of the day
All I could think about was the little girl who lost her "daddy":(
I don't wish the loss of a family member on anyone

It seems like the "macho" thing to do I say how much a loser and child molestor he is
And the things you would do to him
And good riddance

I also liked the way the Jacksons group hugged
They may have been a wacko family
But, they still lost a brother, cousin, or father
Seeing them come together in tragedy was very inspirational to me....

This was in the local paper about 5 years ago
In Solvang
MJ pulls up in his limo into a parking lot where a local Solvang COUNCILMAN has an office
He get out of his limo and goes into the councilmans office

"Excuse me sir..Is that your Rolls Royce in the parking lot?" MJ asks.

"Sir..I am a council man..How could I afford a Rolls Royce?" Council man replies

"Hmmmmm...I got a Rolls Royce just like the one in the parking lot"

"That's nice Mr. Jackson"

Then MJ asks the council man, "How come there is no Taco Bell in Solvang?"

It made me laugh because I was thinking===>
"Damn MJ!! Buy your OWN Taco Bell!!!"

P.S.
Still no Taco Bell in Solvang
There is a new one in Buelllton though ;)

I never cared for him either. But during the memorial they played a clip of him singing a ballad and I thought to myself that if I didn't know it were him I'd probably hear the song out before changing stations...
