Michigan makers, let's talk!

Yes, thanks! Unfortunately I already have a professional continuing ed. seminar scheduled that weekend. :(

O.K. we are one week out from getting together and sharing some knowledge. Is there anything that folks would like to talk about in particular, or anything we need to cover ahead of time?

I would like to see if anybody has an interest in getting together at their shop in the next couple months after that? We need to remember, that it doesn’t matter who or how many show up at my place, as long as we do it again and keep doing it, and get new blood involved when we do it.

I will clean the shop and make things presentable, anybody who has been to my place can tell you that this will be necessary just to get people into my shop. If anybody has a folding chair bring it along to sit on, as I am quite short on seating in my one man shop. The average temperature in my main room is 55F. The forging area is whatever the outside temp is, but without the wind or weather.

Hello Kevin- I am new to this area- presently building a new studio for bladesmithing and would like to get together in my new shop with any one interested. i'm thinking sometime in the spring for this. In the mean time I would very much like to get together wirh anyone else interested in this craft. Let me know what I can do to help in this process.

well i think heat treating would be a good issue to discuss, also i would like to talk about various knife testing methods that actually have some meaning to a using knife. Also, Kevin is there anyting you would like me to bring in the way of refreshments?

Kevin, I would love to talk a bit about low-tech heat treating, fit and finish, blade geometry as it relates knife performance just to throw a few ideas out.

I would be willing to drive in to Michigan I tried in December to get a small Hammer in going in MI at an old Mill we only got 3 people.

For the refreshments, whatever you would like. I will try to have something like coffee, 7up and Coke and some easy food. I don't want to make it look like one needs to have a catered event, and possibly discourage future hosts, the important thing is the sharing of information.

Fit and finish and heat treating will be easy enough for me to explain in my shop. I like the idea of low tech for the first get together. I can share plenty about salts without firing them up until a later date. A good oil, a good fire and knowing what to do with them is more than enough to get started.

My shop will work better in warm weather, I am a little concerned about fitting everybody in, as I said I am a one man operation in every sense. Everybody remember to bring some knives to pass around. It just isn't the same if we can't show and tell ;)

Just remember that this isn't a full blown hammer-in, but a good knifemaker B.S. session for a start. If we put no more inconvenience into it than what would go into having friends over for a nice visit, then there is nothing to lose for anybody who may want to be a host.
