Micro Bowie... My first IBBB (pics)

I threw everything I had at em trying to make them pins black but nothing sticks..I knew I was gonna catch heck for that.

No heck implied... Do you think that flat black spray paint, sprayed into the cap and dabbed on carefully with a tiny brush or q-tip, might work okay???

Bawanna, you really did a beautiful job on Gurkha's IBBB - I really like the way the checkered horn handle and the blued blade go together!

But about the only way to color aluminum is to create a surface layer of aluminum oxide by anodizing, and then using a dye to color the aluminum oxide layer.

I have a Birchwood Casey aluminum touch up pen in black. I will wait for the current coating to wear off before I hit it with the pen. It's hit or miss with the aluminum pens. I have had one work great to get a scratch out of a T6 AR15 upper, but not work on other stuff.

You got it! Mbob. I have done a lot of home anodizing myself and you have to dye the oxide before you seal it by heating. Problem is the heating process needed to seal the oxide layer would soften the laha? Soft laha may not be a problem since its already pinned. I can think of a way to do that with a few 9v batteries, clip leads and a sponge soaked in sulfuric acid but it wouldnt be a fun job for most. might just carve some eyeballs around them pins and let it be:D BTW: not all aluminum anodizes the same.

I tried the flat black spray paint idea and did a couple coats, it just didn't stick. The blackening pin I thought would work but it didn't take much to wipe it off either.

I've wanted to try that alumahyde stuff from Brownell's but never wanted to order a whole can.

Try the pen when you get it, hopefully it works. If not it's in your pocket all the time anyhow and nobody but you and me and everyone on the internet knows, ya know?

I actually thought about milling them down below the surface a tad and then roughing them up and capping them with black acra glas. I was pretty far along by the time that idea struck me and quite frankly I didn't want to risk screwing everything up at that point. Should have done that first thing.

It looks great the way it is. I don't think U need to do a thing with it. I might try the pen in the future but I don't want to ruin the look it has now. It's perfect and you know the old saying. If it ain't broke...

Well I got it all boxed up and ready for the post office. Should go out tomorrow good lord willing and the creek don't rise.

Now I gotta find something to do. Just got finished several hours on the wood pile again, hot shower and some recliner time sounds like the best plan.

GB, you now must realize the nomenclature of your little knife is now changed and you are expected to use correct terminology henceforth to alleviate any confusion in the minds of all newbies joining in the shark infested waters. The nomenclature of said implement was correct until the delightful and talented Mr. Hopke worked his magic upon still said implement. Whereas it was born an Itty-Bitty Bawanna Bowie, it has since become an Itty-Bitty Blued Bawanna Bowie. No. Don't shower me with gifts for telling you this. I understand your gratitude knows no bounds, but all your diamonds, rubies, and 1928 nickels are but pale shades of camaraderie and friendship. To prevent jealousy in the rest of the Forumites, just consider it a minor public service I perform.

First I hacksawed off a little bit of the tang, I like the tang but it was just a little to long for my taste and GB said do whatever I want so I done it.

It never ceased to amazed me when I see how much a small touch can make such a HUGE difference.

The tweaks you did on this one looks absolutely fantastic!

Thumbs up!

How bout a differentially tempered 1941 wheat leaf penny?

I gotta check me root beer jug for one of them, sounds like it might be worth something?

Doc, I need a little left elbow cure, I seemed to have blown the muscles or something. I've applied the icy hot gel stuff and it burns like it does when you hold a match to my little doll but still aches to beat the dickens.

Funny story.

They are putting in a new housing development back behind our place, lot of road work and messing around and today they was monkeying around in front of my house where there's a turn that ties into the road that leads back to the new houses someday.

I'm out chain sawing and chopping wood and a fella comes walking up to let me know they was gonna put in a culvert, kind of straighten my driveway where it meets the road etc.
We chatted a bit and addressed some of my concerns.
He finally came out and said him the other fella he was working with flipped to see who had to come talk to me.
I asked why. He said any guy chopping wood and running a chainsaw in a wheelchair has to be a bad hombre.

I kind of chuckled at that. He said they were kind of told to expect the most trouble from my place. I told em the project ain't over yet. Seemed like nice fella's, if I gotta tangle it will have to be with higher ups than them.

I'm really peace loving and getting soft with high mileage ya know?

Tell em if they see you with a chainsaw you are just busy workin and they aren't in any danger. If you go on the warpath they need to be looking for you carrying a specific Katana OR extra large Khuk....

I think this may just be your best work yet, Bawanna. Everything is so well executed. It is a mean lookin' knife with that dark blueing. GB, you are a lucky man to own it!

Bawanna, that is very, very nice. I kinda like the bright pins/dark checkered wood contrast.
I haven't found anything short of ceracoat that will color aluminum for very long. Even ceracoat comes off little stuff like that.
Have you checkered horn before?

Thank you for pointing out the correct terminology for the IBBBB. I was going to call it the IBBBv2 or the IBBBspecial, but I think you hit the nail on the head. The IBBBB is the appropriate handle. I can wait to have the blued beauty in my hand.

This one was horn. Horn checkers nicely, very dense and uniform.

The package left with the wife this morning, should get to the post office sometime today. It should get to you a lot quicker than it got to me. I hope. You know me and my patience issues.

I just have to stop at the post office for a triangle box to ship you something special. Thanks again for all you effort. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the special something I'm sending out.

Nice work, I guess now you can call it "tactical" and all kind of mean names on top of beautiful.

Tactical and bawanna don't belong in the same sentence.

I work with cops, some of them are absolutely abcessed with anything tactical.

On more than one occasion I've researched various things where a company had a standard version and a tactical version. I asked what the difference was and they were honest. The tactical version says tactical on the side. Extra 30 to 50 bucks as I recall.

I still laugh about it.

We could go with stealth model, don't reflect light and such if we need to call it anything.

Just hoping GB is happy when he gets it. If not we just gotta go back to the drawing board and start over I reckon, nothing to worry about.

I apparently blew out my left elbow on the wood pile yesterday but I do most stuff with my right hand so nothing to be concerned about there cept getting in and out of this contraption of a wheelchair, kind of need both paws for that.

One must admit that marketing people have done a good job snapping "tactical" over pretty much anything and getting more $$$ from the gullible in the process. It's kind of sad.

Sorry to hear about the accident; I recall a branch assaulting you a while ago, it seems wood in various forms has personality and tries to get back at ya. :(
