I put this together today to give to a buddy. It weighs almost nothing, so maybe he will keep it in a pocket or around his neck. It's a Buck Hartsook, misch metal rod, and a Photon light. I made a little sheath to carry all of it, and gutted a piece of 550 and slipped a ball chain in it, then melted the ends to the chain. I've got a couple of other rods so he can practice scraping the misch metal for tinder and striking it, but still have a full rod in the sheath. I had to file the black oxide coating from the spine to make it a decent striker, but it works like a charm now. I don't think rust will be an issue on the S30V blade. I'm still debating on putting a fob on it. It's tiny, but gives a cutting edge, fire making, light, and signaling (the Photon has variable light output and SOS blinking).

Now that I like! That's brilliant. I really need to learn to bend plastic because there's so much cool stuff you can do.

That is an outstanding little kit! Very well done...I to would add a small wrap of orange 550 cord; if anything it would be easier to see it if he set the kit down. Maybe but a small FOB on the Hartsook, one with a cordlock that has the whistle integrated??

Rock - that is why is suggested orange kydex. This is so small that if you set it down it may be difficult to find.

Nice kit, but a kit is only as good as the training of the person using it. If your friend is well skilled then that is fine, but if you are making it because your friend has little skill and is not likely to put a survival kit together himself then you need to make a larger kit.

I would replace that neck chain and just use para-cord with the 7-strands left inside it. I love my Photon Freedom (have many) but would also add a small mirror and whistle. You can tape other things to the sheath without adding much bulk.

Your friend is a lucky guy to be receiving such kit.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I like the orange kydex and the whistle on a fob ideas. They have orange kydex, so I'm gonna order some. There are a couple things I'd do different on the next one. Like make it so you could use a small Tec-Lok with it. SO I may keep this one, and make him a revised version. I've got a couple more NIB Hartsooks. His B-Day is a ways off, so I got time. I know I some some small, two piece whistles for lanyards somewhere, anybody know where to get em?

I tell you what, I am such a HUGE fan of the little Hartsook carried this way. I carry one similar to that while on duty everyday. I've done so for several years now. I had Eric from On Scene tactical make me something similar. Good job buddy. A VERY handy carry for sure.
