microchipping with BG-42

Has anyone had problems with their CF BG-42 millie micro chipping? I just reprofiled mine the other day and I cut up maybe 3 cardboard boxes or so and the blade chipped in 4 places. I sharpened it at about 15 degrees with a 20 degree microbevel. It was sharp as heck but I was surprised to see 4 spots where the microbevel had completely chipped off. It's been sharpened quite a few times so I don't think removing more steel is the answer. I'm going to have to send it back for a screw replacement so I may just have em' slap a new blade on there.

I have only had one chip in mine. Pretty similar edge angles as well. I'm not quite sure when it happened, but the knife has only seen moderate use. My harder used Millie in S30V with the same angles has no chipping.

The BG-42 is seeing some harder use now to see if this is a real issue or just a fluke. It is only one chip so it isn't much to base an opinion on yet...
Otherwise I think I prefer the BG-42 over S30V, but the CF is the biggest advantage:D

Hmm that problem should "sharpen out" of the steel. Had mine chip near the tip, but I might have been doing something stupid. Never happened again though. BG-42 is my favorite steel going because I can get it so sharp.

That's sort of strange to hear all of this. It was about a year ago I was hearing about extreme chipping problems with S-30V. And it wasn't exclusive with Spyderco either. I had heard of Benchmade and Blade Tech models also having S30V chipping problems.

I am happy to say that the only Spyderco knife I ever had any chipping problem at all was an older ATS-34 model. And I only experienced that problem once. But please do keep us all informed. If there were bad heat treating batches I sure want to know about it.

I wonder what Crucible and other steel manufactures attribute all of this to?

As I said I only have one chip;)

I have used the blade quite hard lately and there haven't been any more chipping. The most plausible explanation is that I've hit something hard while cutting and not noticed it at the time.

The BG-42 was my only used knife during a 10 day stay in the mountains and it is possible that I've hit something while deboning meat or cutting other items.

I think incidents often get blown out of proportions on online forums, but I must admit I was a bit worried after seeing a chip on my Mille:o

As I said im going to be shipping it back for a different warranty repair so I may have them look at the blade. The chips are fairly big too, they're the worst chips I've seen in one of my knives. Although, its only the second knife I've seen chip under light cutting. The first was my Rukus but after sharpening and cutting into the stone I haven't had any problems.

Hi Uncle Rukus,

Please ask customer service to get the chipped blade to me so I can do some tsting.

thanx.
