Does anyone have any comments about the micro-kit article in the current (June 2000)
issue of American Survival Guide?

I just made one up that is somewhat similar. I added a few extras, put most of the stuff in a couple altoid tins and slipped them into a small zipperd nylon pouch. Good coat pocket kit.

I think if you can spare the room, you might as well add something. I added a diamond honing rod (I can't imagine being lost anywhere without a decent sized knife on my person), a silva matchsafe with compass, a leatherman micra, a tiny aluminum whistle, a ferrocium firestarter, and a wire saw. I substituted water purification tablets for the iodine and used two large quart-sized ziplock bags instead of one sandwiched sized.

Everything fits easily into a 7 1/2" x 6" zippered pouch with room to spare. The pouch slips easily into a coatpocket, backpack, or it has a lanyard clip for the belt. A cell phone case or something similar would also hold it all too.

Hoodoo

The low, hoarse purr of the whirling stone—the light-press’d blade,
Diffusing, dropping, sideways-darting, in tiny showers of gold,
Sparkles from the wheel.

Hi,

Can anyone point me to the website of the American Survival magazine if they have one?
If not is there somebody out there who could send me an old copy of it so that I can have a look at the articles they publish and see if I can get an subscription on it. I only hope they allow foreign subscribers.

An address/telephone/fax/emailaddress of them would be nice.

Cheers from a tired old Scout from Holland,

Hi Jeff,

I could have known you're the person to ask on such info.

Thanks for the website address.

Other good containers for micro kits are pipe tobacco tins, Large pill bottles, empty makeup containers, and individual cigar tubes. I have used all of them at one time or another and found them to be waterproof. I have used the cigar tubes to "load" a hollow hiking staff. Makes it much easier to color code and separate gear.

Cheers,

Sorry I missed the June issue somewhere and can't seem to find it. I should probably get a subscription (yeah and why don't I also get one for Backwoodsman, tactical knives, and knives illustrated while I'm at it.) Anyway tell me about the "microkit". Thanks

bttt, it's been six months and no answer sounded like a good time to bring this back up.

Okay just built mine it contains:
fishing hooks
small knife
half pencil
tin foil
gauze
3 bandaides
candles
small lighter
fishing line
safety pins
regular pins
matches
I think that's it couldn't find a button compass (other than Brunton not going to pay 2.99 when the shipping is 3) man I wish I could just find one in a store somewhere.

I took the kit I made and posted several weeks ago and put it in the toolbox of my atv. I wanted something much smaller and simplistic, so I used a nylon pouch 3.5" x 4" and loaded it with a very tightly folded space blanket, 21' of #18 braided mason's line, 10' of surveyor's tape, 24" of duct tape, an ACR whistle, GI toilet paper, a Spark-light with 6 Tinder Tabs, 6 bandaids in a heat sealed wrap, 2 packs of neosporin, a Photon Micro Light, a button compass, a one quart size polyethelene bag for water and a GI P-38 can opener. All together, the kit weighs in at around 5 or 6 ounces (guesstimated.) It's smaller and lighter than my wallet. I supplement this kit with a SAK and my favorite lock blade folder du jour. Additionally, I always have a backup firestarting device (Bic lighter) and another photon on my keyring.

PS..Mykl...email me with an address and I'll send you a spare button compass.
