Micron Updates

I don't think i'll be changing anything thats already been made. If it has a survive logo on it, its getting liquidated. If I am putting our name on it you can be sure that it'll be made to our standards. I won't be grinding off a survive logo to put mine on

Time for an update!

We got our blade show tickets! There's a lot to do if we want to drop before then.

MK-4 Production: This is our first production knife, based on the gso 4. Primary bevel grinding wrapped up yesterday and we are moving on to peening, tumbling, engraving, and making the fixturing for the secondary bevel. The hardware is in production and scheduled to be delivered to the heat treater on tuesday of next week. We have sheath components on order and should be on track to have these ready for the 4-5 week mark. We were able to scan and use the fixturing for profile milling and bevel grinding, but not secondary grinding.

Liquidation: We are have been working on the easy inventory first. Once the sheath components arrive and the hardware is back from the heat treater and textured we will be able to sharpen and assemble 11 edc 4's and 20-25 gso 5.1's. The next batch needs similar work plus the secondary bevel done, including fixturing for that. Tentative plan after that is making some scales and more fixtures for things like the gso 4.5 and gso 3's. Depending on how the sheath manufacturer wants to proceed, we may be developing/implementing the sheath production in-house.

Challenges we are facing at the moment:
Social Media- I need to get this going. I am horrible at taking pictures and even worse at taking videos. We want to do a giveaway on each platform when we drop, but we need some content and followers to do that. I've recruited by sister-in-law for help on this.
Liquidation- We have enough components that we could in theory finish out some gso 4.7 and 5.3 (maybe 20 knives total?) but have no sheaths, and the manufacturer doesn't have sheath molds anymore. Should I finish them up and sell them with custom kydex sheaths, leather sheaths, or no sheaths? The more we liquidate the cheaper the other knives will be.
Quality- I've been trying to develop inspection procedures for every step of the way. I've been working on macros for in-process probe inspection and adjustments. We have been making scales, blades, and hardware that are over/under textured with high/low pressure and high/low durations. We've also been testing every blade's hardness and developing a serial number database so we can track material certs, heat treat results, and configurations. Hardness results are not conclusive (one test is not enough, we don't want to put hardness testing marks all over each blade) but will give us enough data to track trends and catch outliers. This type of stuff would be awesome to document but I don't have the time just yet to do that.
Photography- Man oh man, I am no photographer! My buddy and I were having the time of our lives trying to take photos for the website. Action shots and stuff are fun and easy. Product photos? That's another ball game. We finally got somewhere and got good presets so it should be easy moving for uploading and organizing on the website.

Also, the liquidation page on the website is going to be called "Olive's bargain outlet"

Thanks for the update. To be honest, I'm much more interested in your in-house models and the progress on them. The quicker we let S! sink below the waves, the better. Just my opinion from the cheap seats.

Best of luck with everything!

I agree, and thanks for the support! I think we are all excited for the development process but we really do need to get going first. For every step of the process we are making sure the procedures are developed so that when we release more models, the "back-end" development is already implemented. For example, blasting hardware seems simple but we need to determine the ideal outcome and then find a way to measure and train so we all see the same thing. Everything needs to be recorded and measurable for that to happen. Also, we want to help the other businesses get rid of their inventory. The MK-4 will use the gso molds that the sheath manufacturer already has, so they can get that back into service.

im cool with y'all making a better version of s! models that were popular. here's my logic.....youre making them right. you'll ship them when ordered. youre not playing social media head games to trick people. youll honor your warranty in a reasonable time.

on sheaths, my take and buying is..... any sheath is better than none. even if not a great one. just has to work and not be useless. after that its all time and dollars to decide with.

lastly course wouldn't mind new models of y'alls own doing either.

Thanks for the input!

I'm leaning towards leather just to liquidate and get moving. Also, you're right about that logic. I said it months ago but being uber-transparent will be good for the long run. Actually shipping purchased knives doesn't hurt either lol.

I finished some mk-4's by hand so I could have some knives for a camping trip this weekend. Hoping to get some more pics in use so the website can go live.DSC06300.HIF.jpg

knife looks good. lookin forward to your pics on it in use.....

Went camping and hiking at the pa grand canyon this weekend and tried my best to abuse the knives. I have absolutely no doubts that they are where they need to be.

Back at the shop, I am really trying to figure out sharpening. I've gotten the prototypes where I want them, but thats just regular sharpening. Taking 10 mins each to get a beautifully sharpened prototype is no problem. Doing the same thing in 5 minutes and training people to get the same results? Completely different story! If anyone has input on production level sharpening, I would love to hear it.

I've also heard from DBK on youtube, they are excited to get one to beat up. I want to wait a bit so I can get a K890 knife over to them when I start on those.

All right since you asked for any/all feedback, as a disembodied typewritten voice on the internet, I'm gonna be real with you.

Look, you're trippin' dog. Using those haunted knife blanks to launch Micron is crazy. It means your debut knives are literally going to be Survive! knives. You're even going to continue making a few of the exact same basic-bitch models?!

I say do a 360 and walk straight away from all that and make your OWN knife designs, from fresh steel and materials. If you want to support the small companies that got screwed then maybe hire them to do the sheaths or whatever for YOUR knives.

Showing up at Blade Show as a new knife company with a table full of Survive! knives for sale (even if at minimal profit) is the opposite of distancing yourselves from that fiasco. It's just entangling yourselves up into it all even more.

Throw all that fixturing and stuff in the trash, call it a wash, and a learning experience for setting up to make your knife models.

Also I was wondering if you ever found out what was up with that haunted light in your shop.

Any feedback is good feedback LMAO

The amount of support we've gotten regarding this has been insane, just not on here. I'm confident that the designs are worth executing properly. We aren't selling knives at bladeshow, I'm just attending.

And after the fourth replacement of the light, it stopped failing!

Glad the light ghost has moved on.

I was always kinda puzzled about the buzz around those designs. They just seem so very basic. Not knowing hardly anything about the Survive Saga, I was under the impression that the big whoop about them was simply because they were 3V steel.
