Time for an update!
We got our blade show tickets! There's a lot to do if we want to drop before then.
MK-4 Production: This is our first production knife, based on the gso 4. Primary bevel grinding wrapped up yesterday and we are moving on to peening, tumbling, engraving, and making the fixturing for the secondary bevel. The hardware is in production and scheduled to be delivered to the heat treater on tuesday of next week. We have sheath components on order and should be on track to have these ready for the 4-5 week mark. We were able to scan and use the fixturing for profile milling and bevel grinding, but not secondary grinding.
Liquidation: We are have been working on the easy inventory first. Once the sheath components arrive and the hardware is back from the heat treater and textured we will be able to sharpen and assemble 11 edc 4's and 20-25 gso 5.1's. The next batch needs similar work plus the secondary bevel done, including fixturing for that. Tentative plan after that is making some scales and more fixtures for things like the gso 4.5 and gso 3's. Depending on how the sheath manufacturer wants to proceed, we may be developing/implementing the sheath production in-house.
Challenges we are facing at the moment:
Social Media- I need to get this going. I am horrible at taking pictures and even worse at taking videos. We want to do a giveaway on each platform when we drop, but we need some content and followers to do that. I've recruited by sister-in-law for help on this.
Liquidation- We have enough components that we could in theory finish out some gso 4.7 and 5.3 (maybe 20 knives total?) but have no sheaths, and the manufacturer doesn't have sheath molds anymore. Should I finish them up and sell them with custom kydex sheaths, leather sheaths, or no sheaths? The more we liquidate the cheaper the other knives will be.
Quality- I've been trying to develop inspection procedures for every step of the way. I've been working on macros for in-process probe inspection and adjustments. We have been making scales, blades, and hardware that are over/under textured with high/low pressure and high/low durations. We've also been testing every blade's hardness and developing a serial number database so we can track material certs, heat treat results, and configurations. Hardness results are not conclusive (one test is not enough, we don't want to put hardness testing marks all over each blade) but will give us enough data to track trends and catch outliers. This type of stuff would be awesome to document but I don't have the time just yet to do that.
Photography- Man oh man, I am no photographer! My buddy and I were having the time of our lives trying to take photos for the website. Action shots and stuff are fun and easy. Product photos? That's another ball game. We finally got somewhere and got good presets so it should be easy moving for uploading and organizing on the website.
Also, the liquidation page on the website is going to be called "Olive's bargain outlet"
