Microscope

They work pretty good at the lower power. Above 100X they are not that great. For close up examination of fit and finish, they would be OK at 40X. They are pretty cheap, so go ahead and try one ( less than $20). They have no metallurgical value (different type is needed).

I have one and they work great. Mine goes to 1000x and you can literally count the hairs on an ants legs

I've been thinking of getting one of those for looking at circuit boards or getting a close up of tooling or cutting edges.

Keep in the the "1000x" magnification is a little generous, and it's talking about digital zoom, not optical zoom. If you want a really good quality image, you're probably looking at spending $300 to $600, and the zoom will probably only go to 45x or so, which is more than enough for most applications.

For $20, however, you're getting a pretty good tool that's certainly better than reading glasses or a magnifying glass. ;)

I use mine for examining edges, it is amazing every single tiny flaw you can see.

I will put it this way, it will show you a lot about you sharpening skills

I have similar couple years now.
It was so inexpensive, I just had to try it. It works pretty good, very useful for all manner of inspection.

You guys have convinced me to try one, especially since they're inexpensive. Have a new laptop on order, so I may as well pick one of these up while I'm at it.

I have one - cool for seeing your edges -

Here are a couple pictures I captured with my el-cheapo micro-cam -

A new replaceable razor blade -

An edge I sharpened with DMT Duo-fold if I remember correctly -

It is a cool tool - a little fiddly to get pictures and a good sharp image, but fun.

best
