Hey guys,
I have a dilemma. I have a Microtech Bounty Hunter that I've had for about 2 weeks now. Naturally I've been playing with it a bit, occasionally firing it when I have a hand free or get a little bored at my desk. Entirely normal use, haven't cut anything more than clear packing tape with it. Within the first week, the glass breaker that keeps the pocket clip tight loosened I assume from the impact of the blade firing and retracting. So by hand I unscrewed it, added some blue loctite, reinstalled the clip and screw and there were no issues. Hasn't loosened since, threaded in perfectly, no stripping occurred.
Wish I could say the same for the proprietary handle screws: at least a few must have loosened from the blade being fired over the past two weeks, and the two handle pieces started to have a pretty noticeable play between them. Rather than send my brand new OTF in to Microtech and reportedly wait a very long time to get it back (from what I've read, the turnaround time isn't stellar), I opted to order the correct tool for the proprietary screws. My plan was to unthread each screw, one at a time, apply a small amount of blue loctite, and then gently rethread until the screw just started to provide resistance. I hoped this would solve my problem once and for all, but still allow disassembly later on if the knife ever needed servicing by Microtech.
Well when I started on the muzzle-end handle screws, it turned out the screws wouldn't even unthread. They just kept spinning in place. I gently unscrewed all the other handle screws, and it turns out three of the holes are stripped, so now the knife is only being held together by three screws. I think at this point I have no choice, but to turn to Microtech for help on this. I'm concerned mainly about whether there are even replacement handles available for the Bounty Hunter since it was a limited piece, and whether Microtech will even cover this rather large problem with the knife under warranty. Does anyone have any insight into current turnaround time for Microtech? It's a real bummer this is my first experience with an OTF, in particular from a company with such a reputation for quality like Microtech.
Am I screwed?
