Finally Microtech is going cyberspace!!!

Anyways, I did the logo that they're using now and it looks really bad! I don't know what happened when they converted in a .gif (why?) and they drop the colors and the image map for the reflection in the metal part is now gone... : (

But you can be the judge and decide which one is better!!

I e-mailed Tony to notify him that I can put this one up replacing the other absolutely free!!

p.s. is not my intention to take the job from AV presence, in fact I even put the link too!!

Joel, part of it could be that your page image was 65k and the image on the current page is 25k, which is a lot smaller and faster to download.

Don't get me wrong, your page looks a lot better, but that's what you get in the trade off for download speed. If they had kept the image as a JPG, it would have looked a hell of a lot better, IMHO.

You could have easily kept the functionality of your page, and just about halved the file size by judicious application of table background images, and image tiling. For example, the Microtech contact information could have been turned into a 16 color gif, yadda yadda yadda, which would have kept the overall look, yet shrank download times.

Either way, I looked at the Virtual Prescence site, and I think that MT is going to get really ripped on how much they are going to receive for what they pay...

For what it is worth. Your original design is far superior to the logo on the site. I hope it is replaced.

Just as a note, the time difference in downloading the two different pages for me was negligible.

Well Spark, about the prices you're right, but I didn't want to go there....

But about the dowload time...
Remember that we are comparing one small graphic (.gif of just the logo) on the Microtech site, that look bad and my whole page which is a huge graphic (one piece .jpeg)
I can easily make just the logo (as I did it when Mike posted it here), instead of the whole page and time and size will be reduce by 500%!!!

Joel

p.s. sometimes I forget that there are people out there without 56K!! Sorry!

Keep in mind that you could have kept the entire image as well, instead of just the logo, by sectioning off the parts of the image.

As for the download speeds, it's popular opinion that a page shouldn't have more than 25k of information on it including images. For high graphics sites, 50k is the max, yadda yadda yadda. People having to wait 30 seconds for a page will go somewhere else.... especially when there are no text links to take them to other areas on the same site.

I know that painter 5.5 can do the sectioning of images and create a table for proper display, but I have the older version and a crapy program to put web-sites together, but I will love to know how to do that, but remember raw html and I have personal issues that I haven't discuss yet!

p.s. Apology for the non-knife post!

Hey Joel, contact me off the forums and I will be happy to discuss how to do this, and the best ways to accomplish it.

As for it being off topic, well, we'll forgive you this time!

The technical reason that the KNIFE manifacuers logo came out like that is because gifs use "indexed color", this means that any jpg of a KNIFE will use as many colors as it has availible, usualy 16 million. Gifs index to 256 colors, so you get much more dramatic fading on your KNIFE pictures, and KNIFE manifactuer logo's.
IMHO all KNIFE pictured look better in jpg, but the download speed for KNIFE users is always taken into consideration.

Sorry, I tried to stay on topic

SD, you got that right.

Using GIF images allow images to look the same on all monitors, since many people haven't set their monitors to more colors than 256 (we wont get into the 216 colors of Netscape discussion), however JPG's allow a lot more detail, truer color, etc.

More later...
