Microtech reviews?

I just bought a microtech ultratec Spartan. This thing is a lot of fun and very sharp. Initially I am impressed. Elmax steel is good, action is smooth, fast, strong. There's a bit of blade play, but I pretty much expected that from a double action otf knife. It's also comfortable and lightweight.

The only thing is that it seems like this should only be used for light cutting tasks and or a last ditch defensive option. I'm curious though. Has anyone edc'd this blade cutting all the things you'd use a typical folder for? Things like rope, tarp, insulation, rubber hose etc.? Please be a microtech owner that has actually used and experienced the knife as an edc, other wise you're not really answering my question I'm looking for personal mileage not educated internet hypothesis. Thanks!

microtech are bro knives or knives for folks who are into fire arms. they really are not edc knives. tacticool dushebag knafs. even more so now that they are suing ZT even tho microtech are the ones that steal designs and have almost no warranty, and your not allowed to Sharpen them.

oh he's also suing his son, and he's already sued a blogger.

Yeah..... doesn't seem like you've actually used one. However, I don't disagree with you! I've already decided I'm mostly just going to weekend carry it for fun and having something sharp and pointy on me at all times. I do electrical and hvac work and my ZT 0350 is excellent for ductwork, sheets of heavy mil plastic, basically any thick or tough synthetic material I throw at it. To compliment I carry a spyderco ladybug salt fully serrated hawkbill that skins wire like a beast.

I've currently have a microtech anax in carbon fiber. its the most dushebag knaf I have. it doesn't even have detent. and that's on purpose cause they want you to be able to open it like a dushebag.

This thread kind of got douchey. I asked about the knife not the ethics.
sorry, you buy into the ethics.

if you like Jersey shore, you should get one.

but in all seriousness, you shouldn't support dushebags. and should know what the brand resembles.

is that otf a good edc tool? not in my opinion. people are scared of otf's for one, its something you use to stab with. will it cut things? yes.

elmax is good steel, I assume the heat treatment is decent for the prices.

tbo their otf comb would be a better edc.

I have owned and handled many Ultratech in different blade shape because my friend is a authorized dealer of Microtech knife in here. Most of the them came with not very slicy grind due to the shallow bevel but it definitely OK for most EDC task.
You wouldn't find it very comfortable in extensively usage due to the inorganic shape of the handle compare to something like Spyderco. Hope that help.

I use my spydercos, ZT, or kershaw for everyday

Another HVAC dude here Mike!!!
I carry a Pac Salt serrated at work and that bitch tears through just about anything!!
When installing flex duct I'll used an Endura, Spydie edge doesn't do well when trying to cut flex duct!! Tears it up into a mess!
I use my knives every day at work!!

Maybe I'm a douche then. I really only care if it's a decent product because most of all that other crap we don't really know and can just speculate. I'd rather just enjoy knives I think are cool and knives that perform. I'll leave all the gushy heart felt ethics stuff to guys like you.

Korean Hog and that Mike dude are the same don't know why it changed my name around, but yeah I used my delica for flex duct and it tore it up all weird, but recently used a partially serrated 0350 tiger stripe from ZT and those serrations cut flex duct like butter. Cleaner cuts and make ups to taps and boxes are easier and neater looking now too

Also, let me just say there are questionable ethics with tons of stuff just about everybody buys. The amount of stuff made in China and warranty claims are even worse with many many products. It's just knives tend to be more personal a thing than socks, shoes, tipper ware, tv's, cell phones etc. So, I think people tend to get way too personal about the companies that produce the product.

Good perspective, buy the knife if you like the knife. Leave all of the silly baby man drama to those who aren't able to ignore it.....let them waste their time, not yours.

I bought an Ultratech in CF with the hellhound blade this year. It's a nice knife with a wicked looking grind . I carried it on-and-off for a few months working construction and used it like any other knife I own. I just make sure to wipe the blade off on my jeans after use before retracting it. The last thing you want is schmutz clogging up the internals.

I also had one of the UT Spartans last year, but intentionally drunkenly ruined the blade. It is now a "parts knife":)

I also convinced an electrician I work with to get a Scarab, he's an ex-Seal and has wanted one for years. He uses the hell out of it and loves it; only had a couple misfires when it was new. It's the only knife he carries.

For everyday tasks they are completely practical. If anyone tells you otherwise, then let them believe whatever they want.

Enjoy your new Microtech!

^ Even though you've been a member here for a couple of months, welcome to BF's.

Congratulations on the purchase of your MT Ultratech Spartan. Excellent choice! Although I've never owned this specific model, I've owned/own several of MT's other, Ultratech models.

As you now well know, the Ultratech, is very unique OTF automatic knife! Hopefully you'll post an update later and let us know how it works out/performs for you.

FWIW: when I was working up in the high country of Idaho, I would occasionally carry an Ultratech with me (I wish I would've taken some pictures- but I was too busy living in the moment). It had the Tanto edge; it was sharp as hell! It performed very well for any of the tasks, I put it to. I used it mainly for cutting hay bales, cutting steak, and even gutted a few trout. Due to it being an OTF, I didn't want to get the inside wet and stinky, so I was careful in how I used it.

My buddies sons, thought they were the coolest knives in my collection.

The video above, is indicative of just how well a Ultratech will perform, when put to extreme tests!:thumbsup:

What you really need to try out, is a Microtech Halo V. The Halo V is a beast of OT; it fires with more authority than any other OTF I've used, with a rock solid lockup. It's my favorite OTF! :D

^ When you click on a person's profile, there's an option that BF's gives you: "INGORE."
I suggest you try using this feature. It will improve your BF experience, exponentially. :)

You can thank me later. :)

^ Beautiful knife, btw!

I just picked up an Ultratech from a member here and have been using it essentially for everything. I just broke the habit of buying knives as delicate shiny things to collect. Why?
Now, in a personal comparison Ultratech vs. Benchmade Infidel. I've EDC both, I'll say the Ultratech is holding up slightly better...? No real comparisons to blade material or edge and grind, just functionality..
This is use from cutting down cardboard, slicing meat, to do I dare say.. Prying...
I paid for the knife I'll pry what ever I want. I can read the warranty. The Infidel needed more maintenance in the sense of deploying and retracting the blade, it seemed to get weak over time. Ultratech still us firing tough, retracting tough. I don't wipe it off, I touch the edge and use it. It'll be fun to see over time what happens.
Its a knife,a fun knife, if you bought it as an investment or to use that's what you should do. I'll shoot you a pm sometime, if you are hesitant on using yours, I'll send you mine to carry for a month, no strings or worries.
As Kelama said, welcome.

Cheers!
