Microtech Socom Elite alternatives

I'd just like to start out by saying that I don't, by any means, consider myself a collector at this point. Which means that all the sharp and pointy things I buy will be used, so I try to refrain from spending money on pure eye-candy, functional eye-candy would be golden!

So, I'm pretty sold on the Socom Elite, but I'd like to see alternatives to it before I take the plunge. So if you have any ~8-9" manual folder that you think is comparable and worth mentioning - please share!

Also, if you have any experience with the Socom Elite tanto version I'd appreciate to hear it :)

Thanks

Spyderco Paramilitary 2's or their Military model; a bit longer. Lots of super-steels available.

Did you want something that has somewhat similar appearance or simply something else? About the same price range?

The closest overall would be:
Spyderco Military
Benchmade 806 and 805 (maybe the 710)
Emerson Gentleman Jim

I prefer Spyderco's leaf shaped blades much more, never really liked the (Para)military. Thanks for the tip, tho.

Similar apperance, somewhat "tactical" in look I suppose. Price range anything from $100-300, but I wouldn't want to sacrifice edge retention for a lower price. A lot of people complain about Microtech's S35-VN sharpening difficulties, but I don't really thrash my knives so I don't think it would bother me. Once sharpened it would probably last quite a long time.

Never really been one for Benchmades, the Emerson is kind of interesting. Thanks.

Just glanced at the Umnumzaan and XM-18 and I'm having a hard time stopping. What do these knives run without any fancy schmancy add-ons? I read something about the XM-18 being sold cheaper to first responders, please shed some light on this.

Thanks

Sebenza / umnumzaan

In fact, save some time and grab up both, one leads to the other. It is known.

I picked up a Socom Elite years ago. Beautiful knife. Then a Sebenza fell into my pocket and the Socom Elite went back in the box. Since then the Spydie Military has taken its place as a big knife for daily carry.

So many knives, can't carry all the good ones ...

Grrrr. It would require the saving of money, not time!

Are they available in valyrian steel? :D

As I recall they do have some Damascus blades, Specifically Devin Thomas Raindrop. Though I don't think there is enough to forge two more blades, or enough to fight off those zombie things from across the wall :p

there's also the Spyderco Vallatton (spelling?) And a second vote on the 710

Just so you know, neither the para 2 or Military can match the Socom in cutting performance. If you're looking for a cutter, not much else can hang with it.

I have been sorely impressed by the cutting test reviews I've seen on the Socom, so I kinda figured it was hard to match.
