Microtech Socom Elite CPM S90V - pics

so, this is less tough and more wear resistant than D2? Kinda the opposite direction I'd like to go. How does it compare to ZDP-189?

Well S7 more tougher and less wear resistant, as well as 5160. In this direction there is a lot of place "to go".

And this one according to Crucible data bit more togher and way more wear resistant then D2 as well as then CPM S30V (more tougher).

I was wondering what ever happened to your big bowie ( G.Saki?) in SRS-15? I was contemplating ordering one and wanted your long term opinion about it, and if the steel was as good as the specs look like it should be? Thanks, Joe.

Sorry for late replay. I can not give you scientific conclusion. I use it here and there around house on cardboard, branches, bushes. Due to the size and sharpness it is very efficient and comfortable for this kind of things.

I never sharpened it yet and it is not able to shave now - it cuts just a few hairs, but it cut hanging newspaper very well and I am not going ti sharpen it until it dull. I did miss the point when it stop shaving but this happend not right away - I remember testing it after cardboards and first time I chopped branches. It has convex edge and I am not yet know how to sharpen convex edge - I will keep it as long as possible before I try. But it is very sharp.

Most what I cut with it - watermellons this summer. It is really pleasure to cut watermellon with Samurai bowie. It is going through it like Yamagiba through cucumber - olmost by itself. Other knives with same size and shape feel differently for some reason, probably because of superior sharpness - I don't know. It is only Russian Edelveis with 2mm thick blade can compete but it is too short for watermellons.

Steel has darkened after I forgot to wipe it out after cutting watermelon. It is expected it is pumped up PM D2 - I have no complains.

Tahnks, Vassili.

Thank you Vassili. It sounds to me like I would enjoy having that knife. I have thought about the convex grind problem when considering to buy knives. How would I sharpen them? My conclusion is that I would probably do exactly what you have done. Enjoy it as long as possible, then re profile it for my style of sharpening. That could be tough on knives like yours, or the Rockstead that I also want due to the wear resistance of the steel.

Thanks for the tip on the S90V elite. Mine just got here today. There are no visible flaws or imperfections. Lockup is good, and it's competantly sharp. I think I'm going to like it. Thanks, Joe

My favorite knife is my socom elite auto (06/2000) but i dont carry it anymore due to local restrictions and my edc leek is starting to show its age. This looks like a great solution but i have a few questions for those that already picked one up.

Any idea how microtech heat treated this s90v?

Does the grip tape tear up your hands? My older SE has nice rubber inserts that are soft and grippy but i hear the new stuff isnt nearly as comfortable to hold on to?

If the grip tape does suck, who does ray skin inserts?

Edit: Forgot to mention, my thumbs dont bend in the middle so how is opening this thing up? thumb studs easy to use. If you would try it out without bending your thumb in the middle that would be great! The reason i carry the SE auto or the leek are these silly thumbs.
