The Socom has a thicker liner bar [ locking mechanism ] than the Military model.
The Military and the Socom are excellent choices, hard to tell which would be better for you. It would be a personal choice as far as I'm concerned, both being capable folders.
Have no experience with the MOD 700 series.
If you want to check out a review of the MODS, go to www.folders-r-us.org and click the link "knife tests", there you will find reviews of a few MODS and others for your enjoyment.
I like the MODS and Microtechs. MT's manulas are getting harder to find as they have been discontinued. Grab one while you can.
I have the MT Socom and the MODS and like both examples equally.
I havent handled or seen one of the 700 series MODs but I have a manual SOCOM and a MOD tempest. The SOCOM is fairly big with a 4" blade 0.148" thick and 5.1" handle with excellent strong construction.
The SOCOM elite has a thicker blade 0.174" larger thumbstuds a microbar spring lock and is also an excellent choice.
Sadly the manual SOCOM's are getting rarer but i doubt you would be dissapointed if you picked one up.
If you see anything you like in the MT lineup, grab it/them fast since MT has a habit of introducing a new product and then discontinuing it a few months later--sometimes then re-introducing it a year or two later. Their products are, however, top rate.
MOD products have a very similar look and feel due to the fact, no doubt, that the respective owners were originally partners. Also very good quality.
Spyderco is a more mass-appeal company with many knives available in a wide range of price and quality levels ranging from the inexpensive $50 range all the way up to high-level exotic stuff.
Lots of choices. Have lots of fun. Get the catalogs. Go online.
