Mid-size fixed blades in CPM-M4 or M390? (Also, some steel questions)

I will look into the southfork, it's certainly the only s90v blade I've seen in my price range so far, and from comparing s90v on several steel charts, it's toughness doesn't seem to be much off of D-2, which is plenty good enough in my view. Though it's a bit more than I was hoping for, if I go after it for sure, I'm certain the forums here will have a few for a good deal. Thanks for all of the feedback guys, at this point I'm looking into customs, and have the Spyderco to fall back on, so I think I'm set!

Of course, if anyone knows of an M390 fixed blade in this size and price range, I'm still wondering! The EDC 4.1 is a front-runner too when it comes out, if I can get my paws on one.

That's true, I've had my eye on Mules of various steels for a while. They're generally a little small for what I'm looking for, (something about 2" longer) but it's hard not to appreciate what the mules represent. I'm not a spydie fan at all, and buy knives rarely to use for as long as possible (hence all of the research and questions) but if I ever tuned my hand (and wallet) to knife collecting, a complete set of mules is tops on the list to track down, and about the only thing I would consider.

CPM-M4 is a fantastic steel in my opinion. There are several makers that would be happy to work with you (I am sure) to create exactly what you want within or under your budget.

If you are interested, shoot me a PM and I can put you in touch with someone I would recommend.

This is a small knife I EDC (and have for several years) I have used it for batoning, carving, shaving, you name it...this thing has seen it and is holding up nicely! I

These are obviously a bit larger, but they have seen some SERIOUS use and hold edges like nothing else I have experienced.

Regarding comparison to S35Vn...there is little comparison IMO. S35Vn is a nice blade steel, but it follows a very different curve in terms of dulling. M4 will retain a VERY sharp fine edge much longer (i.e. you can chop with it until you are worn out, and still pushcut newsprint). S35 has some phenomenal working properties, but stabilizes to a "working sharp" edge at a higher rate than M4. In my experience, it takes very little work to push S30 and S35 duller than shaving (arm hair) sharp. Not a thing wrong with that, but depending on how sharp you like your blades to stay, it may be important.

What are the 3 knives in the bottom pic?

The GSO 4.1 is at the very top of my Christmas list, though I'll likely have to wait and shell out full price for one the way my funds are looking at present.

Glad I came across this thread. I've been looking for this same type of knife. I just ordered a GSO in M390 and I'm tempted to get one in 3V also.
