Midnight Fatwood Raid: BK7's First Op

I did'nt even know they sold fatwood at wal mart. What do they call it because I have never found any here.

Fire starter sticks or something like that. Got a bag of 100 pieces a few years back for like $5 in the clearance section. Near the grills and whatnot.

You Becker guys have some good threads.

I enjoy hunting for fatwood stumps from time to time but a while back I was at Menard's a it was $4 for a 4 lb bag. I bought 8 lbs, but it just ain't the same. Fatwood hunting could be a cheap hobby though. But I think I need a Becker to have in tow. :D

I've heard of guys buying "fatwood" from stores, and it turned out to be nothing more than sticks of pine:rolleyes:.

Fatwooding is an awesome hobby, it's free, fun, and you get something to keep your sock drawer fresh;)

Oh, and you do need a Becker:D

You can do a search of the internet to find out where the long leaf pine grows and find out if you have any in your area. We are covered in the stuff and I actually have four growing in my front yard. Find a growth and start scouting for resined stumps and go for it. Or you can buy it for about a dollar a pound at several places. I always have pieces of the stuff on hand.

Went to lowes today to get some stuff, got a small box of fatwood for 4 bucks, its
alot better to go on a hunt and find it yourself, but you can never have to much IMO....

Cool pics. Fatwood really is an awesome resource in the areas it is available in. It tends to be more prevalent in wetter climates where it really comes in handy.

Now that I have a BK-2 it tends to see more use than my BK-7 so my partner has it for now.

Agreed, there's no such thing as too much fatwood:D

Thanks dude. It really does seem to be natures equalizer for firestarting in wet climates, I love the stuff, and have pieces of it spread throughout all my gear.

I'm still somewhat undecided whether I like the 2 or the 7 better, though I'm leaning towards the 7. I like the thinner stock, and can see the extra length coming in handy without being much of a hinderance for finer work. Time will tell though.
