Well, the Ren Fest was pretty damn fun. Ate my weight in turkey legs and steak on a stake. I decided not to drink whilst I was there due to me being the DD for our group. I rarely drink anyways so it wasn't a big deal to me.
The bad: I let my wife carry my Benchmade on her the whole day. I periodically checked her side to make sure it was still there. She was so cute using it to carve up her turkey leg. After a while I stopped checking for it. Right before we were getting ready to leave, I checked her side. It wasn't there. She instantly started apologizing. I told her it wasn't any big deal and not to worry about it. It wasn't one of the expensive Benchmades. It was one of the really slim Benchmade gamers with n690 steel. It was a knife my friend Collin gave me in exchange for a sheath. I think those only cost about $25. It wasn't a serious kick in the bawls, but I would still rather have it than not.
The good: Whilst we were walking around, I spotted several people pimping some different kind of kilt. I personally had decided not to wear my tartan even though it was kilt day due to it being really really expensive and not wanting to mess it up (as with most people who own them) and because it was just the Ren Fest and I don't need to be that cool. This guy came by me wearing a "modernized kilt" in OD green. I stopped him and his buddy, who had on a similar kilt, and asked them some questions about them.
Due to the environment of my upbringing, I'm no stranger to wearing a kilt and have enjoyed it on more occasions than I can count. They're really really comfortable , but NEVER practical. I wouldn't recomend wearing one to make a statement or to seem cool trying to bring back a tradition that even most Scottish guys have given up, but given the construction of these new style of kilts and simple design as well as price, I see it being a terrific alternative to the traditional expensive tartan. The guys I was speaking with told me they were Utilikilts. I checked the company out online and found a place near me that carries them. I think I'll be going this weekend to pick one up.
Please understand; I'm not trying to wear this thing to the mall or anything like that. I'm not one of THOSE guys who want to pull off crazy old styles just to be different and "edgey". I actually attend several Scottish festivals and occasions where a kilt is encouraged and some times absolutely necessary. If you show up to a Campbell wedding without one on, you better be able to run FAST or fight REAL good. lol. Anyways, I'm going to go pick one up this weekend. I'll let you guys know what I think when I actually try it on.
Anyone else ever hear of these or have one? What do you think of them?
It was extremely funny to see what some people tried to pass of as a kilt out there. I wanted to stop a few of them and say "look buddy... kilts have a very specific cut to them. They do NOT look close enough to your girlfriends schoolgirl plad skirt to pull that off. Go take her skirt off before someone rapes you." I saw guys out there in plad sheets, what was obviously a woman's dress, random fabric hastily sewn together to look somewaht like pleets, etc. It was more than amusing.
