Might be time for a Benchmade. Suggestions?

I've been collecting knives seriously for a little under a year now, and I've somehow circumvented Benchmade altogether. I have plenty of Kershaws, tons of ZT and Spydercos, a few Emersons, Hinderers, and I owned a few Striders in the past. Some of my preferred EDC's are the Para 2, ZT 550, and XM-18.

I think it's time I tried Benchmade, and I need help deciding. Whatever is most recommended by you guys is what I will likely get. I do want to try one with an axis lock. Some I've looked at are the Barrage, 710, Mini-grip, Ritter Grip, etc. I'm not sure I want to spend too much since this is my first one so I am considering just getting a mini grip, but my mind can be easily changed...

The mini grip would be a fine place to start. I am partial to the 710, 810 Contego and 950 Rift. But in terms of bang for the buck, and if you are okay with a smallish knife, the mini grip is a good one.

Also look into the 940, it is extremely thin and very smooth. It has a smaller handle but I don't think it makes a difference.

+1
What he said.
Hmmm....
Though I do like Ritters more than regular Grips and I am pretty in love with the 710 right now.
Yea....what he said. Everything else costs more than a Grip....that's bang for the buck.

940, its sleek, stylish, and useful. Its one of my favorite benchmade knives. I tend to carry larger folders, but its hard to beat the 940. Unless you can snag one of those LE m390 ares. Its sad that most of my favorite Benchmades are discoed.

I'd say get the 710. The recurve really bites into whatever you're cutting, I like D2 as a blade steel, and it's just a good-looking knife. It was my first Benchmade, and, while I've gravitated more toward Spyderco and Kershaw, the 710 is still in my top five.

730-1203 ares m390 steel and a great example of the axis lock. But if you want it hurry they only made 120 and I doubt there is many left.

Thanks for the suggestions all, looks like the mini grip and the 710 are in the lead currently. I'll probably buy later tonight or tomorrow so keep coming!

I may be odd, but I like my 530 a lot. Super light (1.8 oz), super thin, and a very thin blade (great slicer for spear point). Other than that the 710. I was unimpressed with my mini-grip, but I have large hands, so it was probably just me.

I have a Mini Griptilian in D2, a 707 Sequel and I just got this Bone Collector:

All three are fine choices, but right now my favorite is the Bone Collector.

I own a nib Ares green black. Yesterday I went to buy the black satin. Gone! I already have the regular large mini Onslaught, so I really don't want another In C/F. Which leads me to my point. Green black Ares. Get one!

If you're okay with a larger blade, give the Contego some serious consideration. Axis lock - check, reasonably priced - check (it's on the north side of a hundy, but not by much) and best of all, it will give you an opportunity to experience its CPM M4 blade steel. I've not come across a steel that matches M4's ability to 1) take such an unbelievably sharp edge, 2) hold that edge and 3) sharpen easily. They've even Cerakoted the blade, so the maintenance of this non-stainless is pretty simple.

+1 seriously.

Hey guys, decided on the Contego. Ordered one tonight. Hopefully I'll love it and it will be the first of many Benchmades!

The Contego is a nice pickup. If you like it but want something smaller, the 950 Rift is a great option as well. I have both and love the blade shape. M4 is nice, tough and holds a great edge. 154CM sharpens up easily and takes a fine edge as well.

Enjoy your BM.
