This is the ugly duckling in question:
I'll have to take a glamor shot of mine later this afternoon. I'll be carrying it for a while to test it out but the single reason behind this purchase is the first to my knowledge production blade of D2 at 62-63 HRC. The Metal Complex video where he said Taylor checked one and it was an honest result made me want to see this for myself in action. I've seen a couple of times online where it's described as a "top liner lock" but it is NOT. It's a button liner lock with the liner lock still accessible in the front if you want. Not sure why you would want that but it is. Obviously not as strong of a lock but at least better than a regular liner lock. And I know from past experience you DON'T WANT TO TWIST A LINER LOCK KNIFE EVER NEVER EVER. And a high HRC D2 edge probably even less so.
And just what does D2 at higher than the usual 58-60 HRC at best give you? This was a $40ish dollar pocket knife with shipping. I've never cared for D2 with its still able to rust status, really needs next level sharpening gear to not be a pain, and then I've never really felt the higher edge retention that much better than the usual alternatives in readily available folders. Will this change all that?
No measurements yet but this is fairly thin blade stock to start and also pretty thin behind the edge. Serious slicer potential here. I can't think of another D2 blade I have that has even close to a similar thinness to carry for comparison. An R2D2 would be the closest I have and that's pretty thick behind the edge.
My initial thought is carry this and see how long the factory edge lasts with regular daily tasks and then sharpen the both of them at the same edge angles and do my best to cut the same things and after a week or so see what they both have left in the edge or if their is an obvious winner and wiener.
I'll dig out the calipers as well as the glamor shot this afternoon.
Also add, this same company is supposedly upping the HRC on their 14C28N as well.
