OK, here's the deal. I've got a mil-spec and a newer production model in front of me right now, and here's the differences.
The mil-spec liners do seem thicker, and are not serrated behind the Wave like the new model is. Another difference I see is that on the newer model there is a cut in the non-lock side liner which I believe is the second detent they've added. I really don't see the need for it; the mil-spec shows no desire to open by itself. The lock up on the mil-spec is great, however the liner moves to approximately 60% on the pivot, whereas the newer model is at about 40%. The mil-spec also has no serrations on the liner lock, while the newer model does (actually, in looking really closely at it, the mil-spec does have just a hint of serrations, but they are very faint). Also, the G10 seems to be a little thicker on the mil-spec (the mil-spec on whole is 1/16" thicker overall, while the spacer on the mil-spec is about 1/32" thinner. So SOMETHING is thicker, whether it's the liners, the G10, or both, I'm not sure as I don't have any calipers handy). The mil-spec weighs 6oz, while the new model weighs 5oz.
There are also more serrations on the blade behind the Wave on the newer model, and they are more sharply defined too.
The thumb disk is wider on the newer model, completely filling the cut-out on the blade, while the mil-spec thumb disk has a tiny gap on either side. The knurling on the mil-spec thumb disk is much finer than that on the newer model.
And finally, the end of the blade by the pivot on the mil-spec has a wicked little hanging point, much more pronounced than the new model. I like it!
That's about all I can see. The previous owner of the mil-spec re-profiled the blade tip to duplicate the "new grind", so I can't tell what the original difference was.
