As the title states, I did a mild mod to my Cam 2. Have had it done for quite some time now, just getting around to posting.
This is what it looked like when I got it. As you can see, mildly used:
I purchased it, because I wanted a solid tang 2:
Starting the mod. All the components to strip it with:
Placed masking tape on both sides, and poked holes through the tape for the screws:
Put some old scales on it:
Cut the excess off with an X-Acto knock off:
Slathered some stripper on it:
In just a few minutes, it started coming off:
Done:
Scales off:
Tape off:
Used a Sharpie, and made a resist on the edge:
Placed the blade in a big 'ol glass of hot apple cider vinegar:
After just 20 minutes, she was nice and dark, however, you can see the inconsistencies:
Steel wooled it off, and you can see the discoloration. This is not in the steel, it's where I didn't get all the coating off:
Sanded it clean. Although it doesn't really look like it, I used a sanding block:
Decided to go a different route, and did a mustard patina. Dabbed on the mustard with a paper towel:
Let it sit for 15-20 minutes, then cleaned it, and reapplied several coats of mustard. Then, I added some Brazilian ironwood scales, made by Tommythewho. I really liked the grain of this wood, and the consistent look of the 2 scales. Here's what she looks like now:
Other side. See how well the scales match each other. I really like how the blade turned out as well. I like the mottled look:
Straight on:
Out of the sun. Was trying to show the mottled look a bit better, but didn't really work as well as I thought it would:
Then, I purchased a leather sheath for it. Decently made, at a hell of a good price:
Reverse:
Not made perfectly by any means, but good enough, and holds the blade nice and tight. The leather used for the firesteel holder is a bit thin:
I was going to make my own firesteel for it. I bought the steels, and Worldwood was kind enough to send me a few pieces of wood. However, I got lazy, and a firesteel made by Twisted Limb went for sale on another forum. It has Bocote wood for the handle, and the grain of it matches the Brazilian ironwood scales nicely:
In sheath:
Before and after animation:
Like I said, I was wanting a solid tang 2, but also wanted a 2 with more of a traditional look. I believe I achieved that goal, and look forward to using my "new" blade.
Thanks for looking.
