Military 2

I never bashed the Military for its lock strength. I stated it wasn't my favorite lock, and that I love the design of the PM2. Maybe we don't need a Military 2, but rather a 4" PM2 variant :D. At the least, there's nothing wrong with wanting a 4 way clip..

I don't want all the fugly extra holes in the handle scales. Bleck!!!!! I would not buy another Military if they came with all them holes. Tip down all the way, f--- the rest. ;-0

I don't own a Military because I'm patiently waiting on a second version to come out. I believe I've heard that one is in the works with a new lock design and some similar design mods that the PM2 received, but haven't heard of when it might debut. I don't think it's receiving a compression lock but will not be liner lock from what I've heard. I think a Military with all of the design improvements that the PM2 received would be excellent, and I'll be the first in line to preorder. Any news on a potential Military 2?

Be prepared for a long wait...

Personally, I can't think of any reason to dislike a bunch of open holes right in the pivot area. It's not like dirt, water or other gunk would get into the pivot area, and even if it did, why would it matter??? :thumbdn: :)

Yep, lol. :D

Hi uofaegr,

As you say, there is a Mil 2 in-the-works. As mentioned, the current model (which has been improved regularly over the past 15+ years), will remain in the line. The Walker linerlock offers some unique advantages that the Military model appreciates. the stop lock is refined enough to put into a model, but the capacity in Golden to keep up with current Millie models won't be expanding until after SEP (When the new building will be finished). As Singularity said (and he's been around long enough to have a good idea of our habits), it could be a while.

Hi Buendia,

Welcome to our forum. As we say each day "Hagalo un buen dia".

Hi Cbxer55,

Sorry to disappoint but the demand for 4 way clip will have to include all the fugly holes.

Hi Marthinus,

That is a very extensive collection of research. Thanx much for posting.

I had resigned to waiting for the 2 because the liner lock seemed thinner than it should proportionally to the blade stock and I prefer tip up. However, I recently have wised/opened up on both accounts and plan to get a military as soon as possible. The only problem is I have a Chokwe ordered and both together is a big purchase.

Thanks Sal for chiming in. I appreciate that the president of the company keeps up with the forum and listens to the consumer always striving for improvement. One of the many reasons I love Spyderco products. I may find myself picking up a Millie sometime in the near future as funds come available. As stated before, it was all I could do to not order a Cruwear Millie when they came out, but all funds were allocated elsewhere at the time. While it may not be popular to some to express our opinions for future designs when it clashes with others' personal preferences, many of us appreciate you taking our comments into consideration.

Zing.

Awesome to see Sal chime in! My collection of knives keeps getting more Spyderco knives than all other brands combined because they make great knives first and foremost, but also in part because it is great to see one of the men behind them come on this forum and discuss his products with us. Thanks Sal, keep up the great work!

I was hoping the Military 2 (or 3) model would be one about the size of those small LED flashlights and have a 3-4" green cutting laser beam, sort of what doctors use in surgery, and a nice Walker liner lock.

I can't wait!

I'd love to see a non-liner lock Military, it's not that I don't feel that a properly built liner lock isn't safe, or that the military linear lock is any worse than other examples of the liner lock (in fact it's very rare you hear about a problem with them). However, there's a lot of people, myself included that are kinda played out on liner locks and the inconsistencies that go along with them. You rarely if ever see a post about an compression, bolt, axis lock etc that's not locking up or failing to stay locked, but you can't go a day on the forums without someone posting about a bad liner lock, lock rock, etc. on knives costing $500 and more from even very well respected makers. I myself have seen in this in several knives over the last couple years costing anywhere from $200-$500. Rock lock seems to be particularly common lately.

So it's not that I wouldn't buy a liner lock Military, but I'd jump at the chance to get a non-liner lock Military.

FWIW, there are framelock Military variants.

That's my fault I should have mentioned both individually, personally I don't differentiate between them for the most part because they basically have the same pros/cons. Though a case could be made that a frame lock is even less secure due to the additional exposure of the lock bar. Honestly I've seen more problems in lock fit, lock rock, etc. in more expensive frame locks than in cheaper liner locks.

Framelocks might seem to be a very simple design, and a lot of apprehension about its safety comes from just that. However, a well-made and well-designed framelock (or liner lock) is far from simple in its details regarding construction, and can be some of the most solid locking mechanisms. I've never had a linerlock or framelock fail on me, but I've had one that locked up really late and was corrected with a larger diameter stop pin. Really wasn't a big deal, and the fix was easy.

There's a counterargument that the framelock is more reliable than the linerlock, due to the linerlock being more subject to accumulated dirt/grit/etc. that can interfere with reliable lockup. As far as problems with framelocks, that is simply not a factor with a decently-made framelock, which is what we're talking about if we're discussing Spyderco framelocks.

The first time a tip up knife opened up and stabbed my hand, I decided that I prefer tip down carry. It's not tacticool, but it is safe.

Sal,

Please clarify, does this include the standard Military, or only the '2? Please don't put more holes in the Military, it's perfect :o

I can't seem to wrap my head around how the stop lock is supposed to work...is it a lever on the outside of the knife that deactivates it?

Not really a zing in my book, because I said I will not be buying one for the reason of the Fugly holes, and the different lock. The current model is perfect in every respect. I have three of them after all. I'll probably be buying more of the current style, but for sure none of the 2.
