Military as an EDC?

I have always carried mine in my right front pocket and it has never offered to open even in loose shorts.

Hi Folks,

There I was just sitting around this evening in my back yard, enjoying the warm fall weather and I just happened to have my dear old Military in my pocket. Having just polished it up, and cleaned and lubed the pivot with "White Lightning", I was thoroughly enjoying manipulating it's buttery smooth action.

This knife of mine is one of the early plain edge Military models in ATS-34 blade steel, with it's classy "diamond" engraving...

Spyderco
MILITARY
ATS-34 Golden, Colorado USA

I read, as the writing on the blade gleamed in the fading daylight.

I examined the knife for about the millionth time. I marvelled at the way it's liner lock snaps into position exactly to the same place each time; whether I have eased the blade open slowly, or snapped it open with a quick wrist flick. The blade doesn't move even the tiniest bit up & down or side to side when stressed, and unlocks effortlessly when manipulated that way.

"What a wonderfully made piece!" I thought to myself, as I watched the sun set in the west over the treetops from my vantage point on my sundeck. I absentmindedly reached down and cleanly shaved a swath of armhair from my forearm, which tumbled through the air almost landing in my beer can sitting next to my feet.

"Damn" I said..."That's a fine knife".

I took a sip of my cold malt beverage and noted the bare patch of skin on my forearm, before folding and stowing the knife in the right front pocket of my shorts, and ambling into the house. And I sat down at my computer to share a moment of appreciation with you all.

Best wishes, Jeff/1911.

ps - Here it is, in case you want to see a picture of it:

Jeff/1911: I had one of those for years as an EDC myself. Went back and forth for years carrying the Millie. Then sold it.

Then I got the 440v model and stuck in the drawer like others over time as new knives came into the arena for edc.

In the last year I had started to carry the 440v model again ocassionally with others. I sold that knife for more than I paid for it recently and picked up the s30v version to replace it.

I never really liked the edge taken by the 440v and it sat in the drawer, so upgraded to the s30v model when available recently and it has been carried quite a bit [ for me ] as I'm not into linerlocks as I used to be for defensive needs.

It sits in the RFP as I write this morning. Guess I'm back to carrying it more than I really want to for a few reasons.

It is lightening fast out of the pocket, the cutting ability of the flat ground blade, the size and shape of the blade suits me as well.

I'm torn between this knife and the Chinook which I really like but the Chinook isn't as fast on deployment for defense.

I'll probably retire the millie again when the smf marsoc is sent my way thats on order in the near future.

The Millie is a knife that will always be in the available list in the drawer and not sold or traded away.

I just ordered a CE Millie from NGK (well a few hours ago). I was set on PE and Vampyre talked me into Combo edge, but if I don't need or hate serrations I'll get a PE. Did this for my Birthday. Family is gonna pick up the bill on this one, for once  :D

I've got a SE ATS-34 in my pocket as I write this and a 440V SE up in the safe.Nice knives these Millie's but my first love is still the FRN clipped Endura SE.tom.:)

brownie0486,

I really like my ATS-34 version, that's obvious. I have been thinking lately though, about getting a plain edge one in S30V to try out...perhaps I'll give in to this temptation soon. I also love the Spyderco Chinook.

Best wishes, Jeff/1911.

I can't seem to find a better edc than the Military...the search continues ;) p.s. as long as Spyderco keeps coming out with new models :D

Great knife - I wish it came a little smaller cuz the sucker is HUGE. little too big for my EDC taste. Endura is as big as I go and even thats a little big ( I like a 3.5 blade ) I mostly carry a delica but I wish it was a little bigger and had g10. My dream .. is a mid-size version of the military with a 3.4" blade.

love4steel,
the Paramilitary is on the way- it's a scaled-down Military. Lots of folks here are jumping up & down for Spyderco to release it.
btw- you should see Sal Glesser draw & open a Millie. Scary quick.

You wouldn't kid me would you ??
My next question would be:
When may I purchase such a knife?
Anybody know the specs?
I guess I'll go search the forum for more info.
THANK YOU

(dreams do come true)

I wouldn't pull your leg on this amigo- it's at least 6 months out- that's why there are no pix available. It's been on the drawing board for a long time. You're not the only one who would like to see this one hit the market.

Okay, Okay, I couldn't decide whether to get the Gunting or Military. After reading all the great reviews on both and seeing the pics from Simona, I decided to...

...get both! They'll be arriving in the mail soon! :D

I have 3 now, all in CPM440V in all edge cofigs, I carry the PE 1 in my left rear jean pocket, and woe be to someones a$$ who thinks I can't get it out faster than they can a handgun.
I find the 440V takes a wicked edge, holds it well and lasts forever, I do have a cpl Spydies in S30V but for the life of me I cannot see any improvement in sharpness OR edge retention.
Just MHO and progress is always good! I just happen to think this was a slide to the left or right. Ron

it's all a question of when the paramillie comes out(hoping for my personal xmas gift to myself)... but I'm buying a PE for xmas(if the para isn't out, then a full millie).

I carry both a 4" serrated and 2" serrated, finding I'm not using the se on the millie a lot lately. so I can pair a pe for work with the small se, and carry a ce millie for home use(when I trade the small se for a small(3") pe)..

Just got back from New Graham Pharmacy. Got a serrated S30V Military in my hot little hands. I'll be sure not to lose this one! Sure do miss the diamond engraving my old one had - but I think this new blade steel will be easier to sharpen (judging from my experience with the Native).

This is one folder I don't want to be without again. The past few weeks have been agonizing.

Now I've gotta find some matter that needs separating. :p
