Military carry

HH,
I just looked at your state, didn't realize y'all had a MI unit. I know that AL, MS and FL have MI assets with our SF units and TSC unit. Lot's of fun and jump pay to boot.

I'm sure Roadrunner can tell you more about MI than I can, my experiences with them are either being briefed or working on deployments with them. But from the outside it seems like a very interesting job. On deployments they get to be a lot different than the rest of us, fer instance, we had to wear battle rattle they're out in civvies.

When you go to drill have a list of questions you want answered, if you don't get answers you feel comfortable with ask 'em again.

Y'all got a great education plan over in LA, I wish we could get our State to do something like that.

1976-1999, 06, Logistics Officer (CMF90)

Constantly carried a Fieldmaster SAK, a SOG Power Plier, and a Sebenza or BM AFCK. When in the field, added a Camillus Pilot Survival Knife, a Camillus Fighting/Utility (sorry, I can't say the "M" word, I'm Army), a Randall #14, a MadDog ATAK Hunter (gave to an SF Captain I know -- has it in the 'stan right now), and a Chris Reeve "Green Beret" (just in case I'm recalled to active duty and deployed). These fixed blades are in order of their acquisition, use, and replacement.

Hated the M9 bayonet but since I usually carried a 1911 or M9, rarely had to carry one.

Howdy All! While this is probably the 1,000th thread or so covering this topic, it's going in an intelligent direction for a change.
I am am 11B (Grunt) SSG/E-6. I have carried a fair number of knives in my career and seem to have finally found what works for me and what doesn't. By no means are my choices typical as most soldiers are not knife nuts and (especially lower enlisted E1-E4) buy whatever is for sale at the PX.
THe knives I have carried are

-Cold Steel Folder - rubber/Kraton? came off the handle also
degraded the handle whan some bug juice got on it. **Chucked it**

-Emerson CQC7 - Bought while in Bosnia. Carrried for a while until
I got tired of tightening the pivot. Silly me, forgot to bring
Loctite on ceployment. **Traded it for a cool flashlight**

-Busse Natural Oultaw - Have carried it on my LBV for sometime now,
awesome knife. Worth every penny I paid for it. Definitly goes on
deployment and to the field with me. Warrantee and customer
service make it must have **You'll have to pry it from my cold
dead fingers**

-Buck/ Strider Folder - What can I say have carried this folder
alot in the field. Probably the most bullet proof high production
folder I have ever seen. Definitly worth the money. Have abused
the $h!^ out of it, still works like a champ. **It remains in
my "in uniform " EDC rotation**

-Strider MT - Another bulletproof fixed blade knife. I have taken
this knife on deployment and use it whan a smaller fixed blade
knife is called for. What can you say about Strider knives, again
the warrantee and quality make this one a must have **Awesome
knife in a small package**

-Strider GB Folder- Probably the undisputed Heavy Duty Folding
Knife Champion of the world. Carry mine every day in garrison
while in BDU's. Will take almost any abuse you care to throw at it.
** You will have to pry it from the cold dead fingers of my other
hand**

I own many other knives but these are the ones I have carried in the field and on deployment. My experience has taught me you get what you pay for YMMV.

2LT, INF 3rd ID.

Manix in garrison and a Busse Badger Attack for the field. Always have a Swisstool on my belt. Sometimes carry a small two bladed SAK or soldier model as well.

When I was an e-2 awhile ago, I carried an Emerson CQC-12.

Seriously, you military guys speak a different language. The only parts of this thread I can understand are the knife parts.

1995-Present Air Force Security Forces.

Served in Saudi, Kuwait and Iraq in 2003 for OIF, (Strider TAD Alpha-1 fixed blade, Cold Steel medium voyager tanto and a Spyderco DODO. Training courses and the knives that accompanied me to them. Air Mobility Warfare Center, Ft DIX NJ (SOG Paratool). Commando Warrior Training Center Osan Air Base Republic of Korea (Leatherman, I don't remember which one and a Spyderco Delica). Silver Flag Alpha Desert Warfare Training Center, (Strider SNG). The only knives I have ever been issued were a Phobis bayonet which was crap and a few tools from Gerber and SOG. Now I am getting a desk job reviewing security clearances after 11 years of ground pounding and with the exception of my Darrel Ralph Gunhammer, I only really carry a SAK Ranger.

1959-1965 Army track/wheeled vehicle mechanic, MOS 632 (?) then, I don't know what today. I worked on trucks, jeeps, bulldozers and M113s.

Just a quick reminder about the rest of us; my EDC was a boy scout style Kamp King knife, good for all cutting, screwing, opening and piercing occasions. With that and a fully equipped motor pool shop or M113 shop vehicle, I never really wanted for anything else.

In those days I wasn't the least interested in knives as a topic and never knew anybody who was. Things are different for me today :) , but I'll bet the vast majority of today's service personnel are as they were then about knives.

It's an interesting topic. Please continue.

Ex Ranger, Forward Observer 91-95
Owned and used

Really small maybe 1.5 to 2 inch Buck folder that was in a top BDU pocket, it was just there in case I had to ditch everything else, hardly ever used it.

Buck folder (422?) in LBV it had the green zytel handles, had that one from way back when I was a Boy Scout, it got stolen in Florida phase of Ranger School, talk about pissed. After I was back from Ranger School, I found one laying in the mud on a boat ramp at Benning, used that one a lot, and opened a lot of MRE’s with it.

SOG multi tool, I don’t remember the model, everyone had Leatherman, so I figured I would get something different, main difference at the time was that the SOG had a phillips head screw river. I broke the handles on it either right before I got out or right after.

Fixed blade was a low end piece by a company called Aristocrat, knife was called a Wraith. I had always liked knives, but other than knife magazines had no exposure to high end stuff. The knife got a decent review as a good performer for a good price. So bought it and it did a good job the whole time I was in.

I was issued a bayonet, but nobody carried one till after action Jackson took over the RGT in 94, then everyone carried one except the outfit I was working for at the time, don’t need a bayonet with a suppressor is on the end of you Car-15

I was not a knife nut before I went in but had quite a few when I was kid. I was gear whore though and had I seen more top end knives I would have upgraded what I had in a heart beat.

Dude...

Did you notice the guy you quoted posted in Oct of 2003:grumpy:

yeah I know this is an old thread, but as you can see there's 5 new posts from 5 different guy after mine ;)

I was a tanker in the Army from 1995 to 1999, 12A Armor Officer. I bought a Leatherman PST when I was still a cadet in ROTC. I later picked up a Spyderco Endura Combo Edge with the molded plastic clip and a Buck 110 with a nylon sheath at a PX in Germany. I usually had the PST or 110 on my belt while wearing BDU's in garrison. In the field I carried the Endura in the pocket of my tanker coveralls (no belt) and kept the Leatherman in my helmet bag.

Biggest uses for my knives were for MRE's, engineer tape, 550 cord, map overlays, 100mph tape, cardboard boxes, and plastic bags. I used my PST for minor repair and maintenance of weapons, vehicles, radios, and other equipment. I probably didn't sharpen any of my knives for the length of my service. I knew nothing about sharpening a knife! :D

The Endura was lost or stolen sometime during my service. The PST was lost a few years after getting out. I still have the 110. Other knives I saw a lot at the time were the Gerber Gator and Gerber Multiplier. Gerber vs. Leatherman was a big rivalry among those who carried these tools.

By the way, I love reading threads like these with responses from genuine service members. There is a bit too much speculation and input on knives in the military from from "knife fanboys" who have never spent a day in uniform. I think the trend here is that most service member knives are inexpensive, basic, work tools as opposed to expensive, fancy, tactical weapons.

Respect the Troops!
