Military Clasp Knives

Cheers for the pic' Jack, shoulder is a lot better, I can open a clasp knife now so it must be on the mend :D

Interesting knife on the pic', Canadian perhaps?

Cheers
Dave:)

You're welcome Dave, quite a well-known pic that one.It shows British sniper Jack Bailey in Italy in 1944. If you go to this link - http://www.perthregiment.org/rperth6.html - you'll get a much higher resolution view of the knife

Glad to hear your shoulder is better :)

I'm embarrassed to say that I've still not photographed my various stainless clasp knives :o

Jack

Thanks for the photos Jack. The knife looks like a WWI (6353) pattern rather than the typical WWII pattern. Would like to know more.

Nice knife Samon. It looks to be in very good condition. Thanks for posting it.

Thank you! I didn't think it would stand a chance against the gems posted but I really like it. Funnily it was a gift from a forum member at www.bushcraftuk.com, he sent it to me after I admired it. And yeah, not bad for a knife over 50 years old! springs are like bear traps still.

Jack, the link goes to a site about the Perth Regiment of the Canadian army. Jack Bailey was Canadian (from Stratford, Ontario, not Stratford, UK). The knife shown is Canadian issue, probably made by Case. For a closer look, see my post #65 on page 4 of this thread.

Thanks a lot for the correction, sorry about that. I'd originally taken the image from here: http://waralbum.tumblr.com/post/2585198865  I clearly need to go back and re-read this thread! :D

Hi all, hope this thread is still going! If not I guess I restarted it!
I picked this up in an antiques shop for a fiver, the reason I chose it from a few traditional 2-3 piece military clasp knives (all in pretty salty condition) was because I've never seen one with a single blade before.
What do people make of this? The marks (Mere..... something, and SHEFF ENG) don't look military to me.
I thought that maybe it was either an alternative offering to the military or civilian market either during or after the war, or perhaps made post-war from leftover parts lying around.
Either way, its a nice little EDC for now, though since I'm going to sea next year I am tempted by one of the shiny new MOD spec clasps....
Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I like the bone on that Jack. The jigging is very unique the way it combines the cut trails and the jigs. :)

Nice gesture ADEE.

Nice knife.
Going to sea in what capacity?
Sure, get a shiny new one, and make sure it has a cap-lifter (I've been here too long; I used to say "bottle-opener").

Thanks! I love lambsfoot knives, even if they aren't seen as cool as spearpoints these days, and military folders are just great.

Royal Fleet Auxiliary Deck Officer. I'd originally planned on RN but wasn't eligible due to laser eye surgery. This is of course an excellent excuse to buy an unreasonable amount of shiny kit.

Thanks, it's from the period of World War One, pretty unusual :)

I'm not sure why this thread is currently locked, appears to be some kind of glitch. I've reported it, and hopefully it'll be unlocked again soon

I don't know why or how it got locked, Jack. I unlocked it a minute ago.
